TECHNIQUES
Tip! 15
Inserting the wire Insert a wire around the inside edge of the shape. Using a wire stitch and 1.00 mm wire, attach the wire to the hat using the wire stitch.
I insert a 1.00 mm wire on the inside edge of a pointed perched hat. This helps the close shaping of this hat and stops it from riding up off the head.
Trimming
When using a self- straw trim, make sure that the grain of the trimming goes the same way the grain is on the hat.
16
Inserting the head-fitting ribbon Insert your petersham as normal but with the seam of the petersham at the pointed end.
17
18
Seating a hat on a dolly head Final thing to do after making and decorating a hat is to place your hat on the dolly head in the position it should be. Pin the hat onto the dolly head with long glass- headed pins between the petersham and the hat base. Make the hat sit as close to the head as possible. Steam the hat all around the areas pinned and leave to dry on the dolly for about 20 minutes.
Next issue
I love the subject we will be covering in Issue 94. It’s an essential skill and necessary for every budding milliner’s portfolio. So, make sure that you don’t miss it!

Affixing the hat to the head Use either hat elastic, headband or wired prongs to attach the hat to the head. The choice is yours.
