By Elly Stemerdink The trade fairs
For this trends report we visited three trade shows: FASHN ROOMS, Who’s Next and Première Classe. FASHN ROOMS is probably better known to most people as trade show Gallery FASHION & Shoes in Düsseldorf, which continued in 2022 under a new name. All three trade shows started slow, but ended with the final two days, Sunday and Monday, as the busiest days. Most hat exhibitors mentioned that sales had been not too bad, but also confessed that they had come with very low expectations. With the exception of Dasmarca at Who’s Next, UK brands still hadn’t returned to the trade shows in Düsseldorf and Paris. The combination of Brexit – which became effective just a few months before the pandemic started – and the pandemic itself, made them decide to either present their new collections online or at UK shows only. Visiting a trade show in Paris starts
to feel like an ongoing challenge for overseas buyers anyhow. External factors such as terrorist attacks and protests by the yellow vest movement caused declining numbers of visitors from Asian countries in previous years. In the past two years, it was almost impossible for non-European visitors to plan a trip to Europe because of the pandemic. Just as most European countries finally lifted all restrictions and borders were opened up again, the war in Ukraine started. One of the side-effects of the war is a no-fly zone over Russia, forcing all airline companies to choose for alternative, longer – and more expensive – routes for their flights between Asia and Europe. When a trade show attracts fewer visitors, brands will think twice before
