Exhibition
of Headwear at the Bavarian National Museum
A new exhibition at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Bavarian National Museum) in Munich offers a comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural development of headgear from the Middle Ages to the present day. Opening October 20, 2022, ‘Hauptsache: Hüte, Hauben, Hip-Hop-Caps’ (‘Heads up: Hats, Hoods, Hip-Hop Caps’) features around 250 hats, bonnets, caps and other original headwear from the museum's own unique collection, which includes hats from Bavarian kings and queens and prominent historical figures such as Ludwig I, Ludwig II, Otto von Bismarck and Stephanie of Austria. As well as examining fashion
history, the exhibition also focuses on social and economic contexts and explores diverse materials and production techniques. Sculptures, porcelain figures, costume dolls and
paintings serve to illuminate how hats, bonnets, hoods, veils, wreaths and caps were worn from the 16th to the 19th century. Further highlights include iconic ladies' hats loaned from private collectors from the ateliers of Dior, Pierre Cardin, Moschino, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix, and unique pieces by international luminaries such as Philip Treacy, Stephen Jones and Cécile Feilchenfeldt, as well as the latest creations by Munich-based fashion designers and artists. Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis is the patron of the exhibition project and will also contribute two original items from her personal wardrobe. The exhibition is sponsored by the American brand Stetson and complemented by loans from the company archive.
