Raquel Delgado, Sr Director, Lubrizol Life Science Technology, on accelerating personal care innovation


Q: When did you begin your career at Lubrizol and what most excites you about the work you are doing now? Raquel Delgado (RD): After graduating, I started at Lipotec with an internship, followed by an industrial PhD in pharmaceutical delivery systems. We adapted these technologies for


the beauty industry, which fascinated me for its mix of science and art in offering scientifically based solutions to customers worldwide.


Q: Your title is Senior Director, Global Beauty Technology. Can you describe how a role like yours has evolved in the last 10 years and what tools and technology you rely on in your day-to-day work? Do you lead any specific research areas in addition to your role leading global beauty? RD: The evolution of this role has been influenced by significant industry changes, including sustainability customer goals, diversity and inclusion across different skin types and genders, and new technologies to enhance human intelligence. Additionally, our research approach has been diversified to cover both local and global scopes. Recently, the scope of this role has


expanded to include beauty, home care, pharma, and nutra. This expansion provides an opportunity to learn and implement best practices across a large business unit.


Q: We know that delivering the most innovative products takes technology,

labs, capabilities and human expertise. Can you break down the impact of each at Lubrizol? RD: The integration of these elements ensures the successful introduction of new products year after year, gaining market recognition and inspiring customers to innovate. Technology: Represents an opportunity


and challenge for our scientists to explore all possible fields, integrating new technologies into our strategic framework and securing business support to advance them through our pipeline. Labs: Our laboratories provide a disciplined environment where we can explore technical possibilities with the highest standards, ensuring reliability for our customers with the most advanced equipment. Capabilities: Lubrizol’s broad range of capabilities, combined with a a One Lubrizol approach, allows us to address complex challenges and provide solutions that are both effective and efficient. Scientists: Undoubtedly, our scientists are the cornerstone of our success. They bring ideas to life by striving for the highest efficacy, ensuring the safety of our solutions, and incorporating all necessary sustainability attributes. Our team consists of highly skilled professionals who contribute significant knowledge, experience, and creativity, driving our success and maintaining our industry leadership.


Q: Can you provide an example of how resources come together to deliver innovative products with maximum benefit to the end user?


RD: We overcame a significant challenge as we pushed to surpass the performance of Argireline peptide, our highly successful product in the beauty industry, as it approached the end of its patent protection. This required us to engage all our scientists in an intensive effort to identify new mechanisms of action and innovative functionalities. Our goal was to create a multifaceted


product incorporating cutting-edge technology that had not been previously explored and could be protected by intellectual property rights. The team performed exceptionally well, and we succeeded in developing our next evolution with the introduction of Argireline Amplified peptide.


Q: Beauty is your focus, but do you have any examples of the capabilities of Lubrizol for a wider range of applications? RD: After evaluating the effects of these science tools on beauty and confirming them through customer feedback, we implemented them throughout Lubrizol. There are initiatives underway to support our home care and pharma projects, engineered polymers and coatings, as well as corporate projects that will be integral to our additives business.


Q: On a personal note, what do you enjoy most about working for Lubrizol? RD: I am enthusiastic about being part of a company grounded in scientific principles. The new tagline, ‘Imagined for Life, Created by Science’, captures the pride I feel in collaborating with our skilled team to deliver benefits to consumers globally every day.
