It gives me enormous pleasure to introduce this 25th
anniversary special
edition of Personal Care. In this one-off edition, we reflect on the past 25 years in personal care ingredients and formulation while keeping an eye on the future.
There are several unique company perspectives
specially commissioned for this issue. Innospec tells the story of how it has met changing consumer demand over the years, citing its Iselux surfactant as a sort of mirror that reflects changing needs. Lubrizol looks at personal care ingredient R&D
and how it has expanded its R&D and lab network to keep pace with technological change. Koster Keunen shares its journey of offering raw waxes in the early days to today’s portfolio of sustainably sourced waxes, esters, and speciality ingredients. Elsewhere, Dow looks back on the past 25 years
and how it navigated substantial change in the personal care industry. In addition, there is a personal perspective
STEP COMMUNICATIONS
on the green evolution of the beauty industry by Barbara Olioso, and a typically no-holds-barred
piece by Theresa Callaghan on the past, present and future of claims. Meanwhile, there is a fascinating interview with
Croda Consumer Care president Sandra Breene, who shares her considerable insight gained from 35 years with the British firm. Elsewhere, there is a site visit to Syensqo’s cutting-edge microbiology laboratory in Lyon, France. There are also some technical articles, including
from long-term contributors Natura-Tec and DSM- Firmenich, as well as new kids on the block like Kutanios.
Last but not least, there is a five-page
retrospective about Personal Care itself (p. 38), which tells the story of how it came into being and the people who built what it is today. I have greatly enjoyed putting this 25th
anniversary edition
together and hope you enjoy reading it. Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted, on this
page, that there is a new member of the Personal Care editorial board: Lorna Radford, founder of UK bespoke beauty and personal care formulators Enkos Developments. Half-Korean and half-English, Lorna has a unique perspective and I am thrilled to welcome her aboard. Enjoy the magazine.
