R COMPANY PERSPECTIVE 55
Figure 1: The advantages of automation
Lubrizol’s technical team analyses in vitro and in vivo data to validate conclusions, using biomolecular expertise, computer vision, and proprietary web apps to evaluate ingredient performance for skin benefits. Specialized algorithms process data and extract significant information from clinical testing images and videos. Lubrizol scientists are also enhancing new product development with high- throughput screening tools. “These laboratories are crucial to our
operations as they approach the pivotal phase where years of in vitro research, consisting of numerous screening and functional validation assays, are tested on volunteers,” said Raquel Delgado, Lubrizol’s Sr Director, Lubrizol Life Science Technology. “Consistency in these laboratories is of the utmost importance. We ensure that our facilities, equipment, and trained personnel are utilized to their full potential. This enables us to gain insights into our ingredients across various skin types and conditions globally. “Additionally, we will soon be expanding our
operations in Brazil, which will also allow us to extend our research into hair care, leveraging the diversity offered by the country.”
The digital way ahead From molecular design to screening and formulation expertise, Lubrizol’s research programs now incorporate advanced capabilities across all stages. Human insight is still critical, says Delgado. “By integrating the profiles of new scientists
with traditional life science disciplines (chemists, pharmacists, biologists), we have enhanced our ability to compete and provide superior

ingredients by combining human insight with cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools.” While digital tools play a large role in R&D,
data gained through market intelligence is increasingly valuable for Lubrizol’s customers and has a big impact on ingredient development.
Consumer insights + market trends + scientific expertise = innovation for customers Lubrizol’s Foresee Lab™ monitors market trends and consumer behaviours, then translates the findings into insights and innovation opportunities for brands. The work is backed by high-end digital platforms and experts globally. “We identified a unique opportunity:
combining consumer insights and market trends with our scientific expertise to help B2B beauty
customers turn insights into innovations that really resonate with final consumers. This approach allowed us to go beyond technical support and demonstrate a deep understanding of the market from both a consumer and trend perspective—key to building stronger customer relationships in the beauty industry,” says Paola Perez, a Global Strategic Marketing Manager for Beauty at Lubrizol. “Once we found this sweet spot, we spent
two years expanding our ecosystem of data sources. We integrated more digital platforms powered by AI to track what consumers are discussing online, what they’re searching for, and to forecast the growth of skin care technologies and claims. This enabled us to deliver even more relevant, forward-looking insights to our customers. Also, the team has a background in innovation, sociology, marketing and science, with wide experience in the B2C space launching new products and brands,” Perez said.
Foresee Lab success story: Facial proportions restorer serum product concept Lubrizol’s Foresee Lab team recently delved into research that revealed growing interest in facial asymmetry surgery and face sculpting. Beyond traditional lifting and filling, consumers are increasingly concerned about facial shape and symmetry, as they are seen as strong as strong indicators of age, intensified by frequent screen use.
