The future of personal care ingredient R&D

Lubrizol is a classic example of the change and growth that has taken place in the personal care market in the last 25 years. In 2000, Barcelona-based Lipotec was known in the industry for research, development and production of innovative active ingredients and delivery systems for application in skin care and cosmetics. That industry leadership has only grown since Lubrizol’s acquisition of Lipotec skin care actives in 2012. Today, Lubrizol continues to partner with
customers to develop, manufacture and market a broad range of differentiated ingredients and formulations for skin care, hair care and skin cleansing. As early and enthusiastic adopters of data science, AI and other technology, Lubrizol has furthered innovation in countless ways in the last quarter of a century. For example, computer vision capabilities
combined with AI allow Lubrizol scientists to analyse a larger number of images in a fraction of the time it would take to analyse them manually. A large volunteer database compiled by Lubrizol at sites in Spain and China now provides a wide variety of skin and hair images, giving researchers more ways to test and deliver fast results. Lubrizol, a global specialty chemical leader,
has an extensive portfolio of products that goes well beyond the beauty segment and has a deep reserve of research expertise. With 100+ facilities, serving 100+ countries, Lubrizol R&D teams have global support and opportunities for cross- disciplinary projects that enlighten and elevate the work of individual research groups. And while product innovations and customer
demand are vastly different now compared to 2000, Lubrizol’s emphasis on R&D and innovation has not changed. A snapshot of 25 years shows the ways research and product development have evolved and expanded.
Innovation gained industry attention Before being acquired by Lubrizol in 2012, Barcelona-based Lipotec was known for its research, development and production of active ingredients and delivery systems for skin care. The company’s success soared even higher with the development of the anti-aging peptide Argireline™.

The original Argireline is still in high demand,
as is the next-generation innovation, Argireline Amplified peptide, developed by a Lubrizol team addressing the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry and launched in 2020. Leveraging Lubrizol and Lipotec technical
team enabled Lubrizol to advance speed- to-market capabilities and serve an even larger base of customers, adding hair care and skin cleansing to the list of applications for customers.
In vitro, in vivo in Barcelona, Shanghai and beyond Lubrizol expanded its R&D and lab network in Asia Pacific and significantly boosted global beauty research capabilities last year with the opening of the Lubrizol Beauty Research Institute in Shanghai. While Barcelona remains a major beauty research hub, the Shanghai site
