December 2018

The December issue is usually a quiet one as the industry beds down for the festive break and heads gleefully into the New Year, but this couldn’t be further from reality this month. A flurry of last minute activity in Brazil of the sports- betting kind meant slashing and burning our lead news stories this issue as exciting news broke from the senate. More sports-betting coverage runs throughout the December magazine, including the start of our irregular US Sports-Betting Update, which kicks of this month and will run throughout 2019 as we continue to track progress in the United States.

There are plenty of stories concerning bans, police raids and mergers and acquisitions this month too, which should keep the ambulance-chasing news- hungry very pleased, while we take a more considered look at the progress being made in Monaco, 12 months down the line from our 2017 interview with SBM’s Pascal Camia. The changes taking place in the last year are transforming the image of Monte-Carlo at both the local and global level at an unprecedented pace and there’s more to come as plans lead through to 2020.

A FLURRY OF LAST MINUTE SPORTS-BETTING ACTIVITY IN BRAZIL MEANT SLASHING AND BURNING OUR LEAD NEWS STORIES

This month we also tackle a market report that’s tiny, complex and fascinating. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a complicated relationship with gaming that’s evident in its operations, legislation and taxation structure, all of which we explore in this issue’s market report.

We take a back-stage tour as Merkur Casino readies the opening this month of its new casino in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany, and head to the Canadian city of Vancouver, the location of our architect’s study of the PARQ casino. Set within stunning sculptured landscape of glass and steel sandwiching two hotels, restaurants, spa, meeting and event spaces and wellness centre, Lead Designer, Maxime-Alexis Frappier describes the project in detail.

We also finalise our coverage of the G2E show in Las Vegas this issue - a consequence of the size and scale of the latest show as it has embraced sports- betting post-PASPA, with dozens of additional exhibitors pressing the booths with a wealth of sports-betting offers to bring US operations up to speed as rapidly as possible. And our thanks to IGT’s Dallas Orchard for taking us on a rollercoaster ride through the company’s latest games offering, answering all our questions and being frank and open about the games IGT has been creating under his watch. Enjoy.
