The Benefits of Manual X-Ray Inspection for Medium-Sized Companies

absolutely critical. Under current conditions, com- pounded by the continuous miniaturization of components, ever-higher board densities and hard-to-view areas, inspection systems are pushed to their limits. X-ray systems are a major but vital
investment for small- and medium-sized companies. They are becomingly increas- ingly worthwhile, as they can be integrated into a wide variety of processes. Flexible, universal X-ray systems are now a necessi- ty for many electronics manufacturers. These X-ray systems can be used in
both manual (MXI) and fully automated (AXI) modes to perform nondestructive test- ing of PCBs, components and assemblies. Their versatility is also making them useful for a wider range of applications.
Batch Size 1 X-ray systems can be used for inspec-
tion of assemblies in series, as well as for random sample inspection. This is often the case for manufacturers evaluating field returns. X-ray systems can be used to check die bonds, BGA and flip chips and voids in soldering. Misalignment of bonding wires with- in an encapsulated component, which can
be caused by the intrusion of casting compound, can also be documented using X-ray inspection. X- ray systems can also inspect THT solder joints, positioning of wedge bonds and unpopulated, mul- tilayer PCBs. Ceramic substrates, as well as classic FR4
PCBs can also be subjected to X-ray quality con- trol. The same applies to plastics, weld seams,
composite materials, etc. Final assembly inspec- tion must not be overlooked, nor measurement of electrical and mechanical end components, such as circuit breakers for the automotive industry. In this example, distances, positions, or dimensions can be analyzed and tracked.
