Blankets of Hope for Those Being Treated for Cancer

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

An army of volunteers is re-

quired to help knit blankets for people being treated for Cancer in Cork County. The Cork Can- cer Care Centre has re-launched their Blanket Appeal as their current stock is dwindling. The initiative is designed to support patients who are under- going chemotherapy. The treat- ment comes with a variety of side effects which can make the procedure very unpleasant for patients. Many going through cancer feel extremely

treatment cold,

and this has a knock on affect with the need for extra heating

and the rising cost of utility bills at a time when money may be short. The Blanket of Hope Project

provides common comforts to help ease the side effects, such as a warm blanket, snacks and lip balm. Knitting

Clubs, Retirement

Homes, and Countrywomen’s Branches are being urged to get involved. Blankets can be dropped to the

Group Support Centre between 10:00am and 5:00pm Monday – Friday. Further information can be

found at http://www.corkcan- cercarecentre.ie/ or by calling 021-4949090.

experience, allowing the more novice riders to get involved. Leading out the easy paced trek will be Roy Daly, and the Lily Jane Carriage from

Castlemartyr Resort. Other carriages are also welcomed, as well as an- yone who’d like to walk alongside the trek. Help- ing to organise the event alongside Cobh Rescue Horses

is Vicky Tait.

“It’s going to be a great day out. We have a gor- geous route of around 8 miles planned, which will be easy going so the whole family can take part. The 1st

anniversary

of my nephew’s death will be the day after the Ride by The Tide and I’m so proud to be help- ing out both Pieta House and Cobh Rescue Hors-

es in his memory.” A Fancy Dress Com-

petition promises spot prizes and there

will

also be a raffle. The event for two such wor- thy charities

is sure to

be great fun and a great confidence booster for young or novice riders. Organisers have

asked

that all under 16s be ac- companied by a respon- sible adult, and that the use of riding helmets is compulsory for all. The trek will not be cantering or galloping, either on roads or the beach. All riders are responsible for their own behaviour. It is

preferable that no dogs are brought along to the event for safety reasons. Parking facilities will be located outside

the

village and the assem- bly point will be clearly sign posted as you enter the village. All guide- lines for the event will be discussed before com- mencement. Entry fees are €20 for

horses and €15 for po- nies, all payable on the day. Donations are also very welcome. Refresh- ments will be served at the half way mark.
