Make or break weekend in Hurling Championships This coming weekend
will see action right across the grades
in hurling as
knockout competition hots up with games in Junior, Intermediate, Premier Intermediate and Senior hurling down for decision, with East Cork sides look- ing to make progress right across the grades. The action begins on Friday night August 31st
in
Ballynoe at 7.30pm. SHC: Carrigtwohill v Sarsfields Both
former winners
of the competition will be in opposition in this East Cork clash which should produce a good contest. On paper Carrigtwohill would appear to have it all to do against Sarsfields, but Carrig are champion- ship battlers and they will give it a right shot. Players such as Padraig and To- mas Hogan, Jay Horgan, Robert White and Daniel O’Mahony will backbone Carrig while Sarsfields will look to county men Daniel Kearney, Jack O’Connor, Liam Healy and Conor O’Sullivan to spearhead their challenge. It could be a tight contest, but Sars- fields will probably shade the verdict.
PIHC: Blarney v Watergrasshill in Mourne Abbey at 7.30pm Last chance saloon for
Watergrasshill at the home of Clyda Rovers on Friday night where Blarney will provide the opposition in what should be another close contest. Blarney with Cork star Mark Coleman and Joe Jordan to the fore will be the slight favourite, but Watergrasshill have performed well in the Ab- ernethy Cup and if Shane and Paddy O’Regan, Anthony Cronin, Kevin O’Neill and John Halbert are on song then I would expect Watergrasshill to win.
IHC: Blackrock v Dungourney in Fermoy at 8.00pm Following a superb win over Tracton, last out
Dungourney
Denny and Shane Hegarty should have enough to get past
the Rockies, but if
Michael O’Halloran starts along with Patrick Deasy then Blackrock would be a lot stronger, but it would be a big surprise were Dung- ourney to lose this one. Saturday September 1st
in Pairc Ui Chaoimh SHC: St
Douglas at 3.30pm SHC: Glen Rovers
Finbarrs v v
Midleton at 5.00pm Headquarters will house
this attractive double head- er in the Senior hurling championship with St Fin- barr’s taking on Douglas in the opener. Players such as Damien and Conor Cala- hane, Robert O’Mahony, Eoin Keane and Billy Hen- nessy were to the fore when the Barrs defeated Kil- leagh, but they will need to be a lot more clinical with their finishing if they are to get the better of Douglas, who can call on the likes of Eoin and Alan Cadogan, Stephen Moylan, Shane Kingston and Robert Turnbull along with Mark Collins and Cian McCa- rthy. It should be a good contest and if Douglas fire on all cylinders then I give them the verdict to come out on top.
Midleton V Glen Rovers In the second game of
the afternoon Midleton will face Glen Rovers in what should be a crack- ing contest. Players such as Dean Brosnan, Gra- ham Callinan and Patrick Horgan will spearhead the Glen Rovers challenge while Midleton will hope that Conor Lehane, Luke Farrell,
Paul
Cormac Walsh and James Nagle
are in top form.
This will be expected to be a cracking contest and it should not disappoint. A draw cannot be ruled out but on current form Glen Rovers would appear to be most peoples fancy with Midleton having it all to do but if they hit top form they would be capable of winning.
time must
be fancied to account for Blackrock in Fermoy on Friday night. Players such as Brian Hegarty, Kieran Ahern, Bill Ahern, James McCarthy along with Ryan
SHC: Erin’s Own v UCC in Riverstown at 7.30pm Erin’s Own will meet UCC in what promises to be another good contest in Riverstown on Saturday night with the students cer- tain to pose a strong chal- lenge to the men from Ca- herlag.
Roche, Conor Gleeson, Jamie
Jack Barry, Shane Barron, Michael
Kearney are all useful hurl- ers for the students, but one would expect Erin’s Own with Cormac Dooley, Jack Sheehan, Mossy Carroll, Andrew Power,
Murphy, Shane Murphy and Robbie O’Flynn
come out on top. SEMI _FINALS Down for decision in Junior A Hurling Championship St
Rostellan at
Eoghan to
sport@eastcorkjournal.ie
to be much better this time round. Last year’s beaten finalist was given a serious wake up call last week and I expect the Frank Flan- nery will have them right this time round and they are taken to reach the final which is fixed for Sunday September 9th
martyr at 3.00pm.
Ita’s v Lisgoold in 3.00-pm on
Saturday afternoon should draw a good crowd to the Aghada venue
with St
Ita’s hoping to build on last weeks win over Car- rignavar. Seamie Harnedy who posted 1-10 in that match will need to be in a similar vein of form and if Ciaran and Daragh O’Brien, Mark Coleman, Bobby McCarthy and Sean Supple step up to the plate then St Ita’s could be back in the final. Howev- er, Lisgoold who were free last week will fancy their chances and with Kieran and John Cashman, Liam O’Shea, Noel Connery and John Cronin hurling well for them at present. It could come down to a shoot-out between Har- nedy and Cashman to see who advances with Lis- goold possibly shading the outcome.
Cobh v Russell Rovers in
Carrigtwohill at 6.00pm The second semi-final
Haughney,
will take place on Saturday evening in Carrigtwohill where two clubs who have been beaten finalists in re- cent year’s face one anoth- er for a place in this year’s final. Cobh got the better of Sarsfields at this venue last week, while Russell Rovers were fortunate to defeat Erin’s Own in in- jury time. Cobh had good displays
from Jack Ron-
an, Sean Hilliard, Kieran Histon, Adam McCarthy, Alan Walley, Lee Murphy, Conor MacLoughlin and Cian Spriggs and if they perform as well again they would
certainly have a
chance. Russell Rovers on the other hand were well below par last week so one can expect a much stringer showing on this occasion. Fintan Murray got them out of jail last week with a late goal, so I would expect JP and Kevin Ivers, Chris Ruddy, Kieran Walsh, Jack McGrath, Josh Beausang, Brian Hartnett and team captain Daniel Moynihan
Sunday September 2nd The big game will be the
meeting of four -in- a row seeking Dublin and Tyrone in the All-Ireland senior football final, with Kerry looking for a five-in- a row in the minor decider where they meet Galway. They should be two good games with the minor likely to produce the more flowing football. All neutrals will probably be shouting for Tyrone in the senior de- cider, yet this Dublin side which if it wins on Sunday will equal the great Kerry side and they would then have a shot at the five in a row something that was famously denied Kerry by that Seamus Darby goal for Offaly right at
the death.
We have had a superb hurling championship and the football
really needs
a good final as so far with the exception of the odd game it has failed to ignite. We hope it will produce the goods on Sunday. SHC: Imokilly v Bishopstown in Riverstown at 7.15pm This game in the senior
hurling championship is down for Sunday evening but is not certain to go ahead, so do please check before travelling. Holders Imokilly will be fancied to come out on top but a lot of their squad will have had hard games over the weekend, so this could be a banana skin for them. Bishopstown had Shane O’Neill, Pa Cronin, Di- armuid Lester, Brian and Tomas Murray along with keeper Ken O’Halloran in fine form last time out so they will provide a serious challenge to the defending champions. Still players such as Colm Spillane, Bill Cooper, Timmy Geaney, Dan Mangan, Brian Mulcahy, Declan Dalton, Ger Millerick, Will Leahy along with Seamie Har- nedy and Ciaran O’Brien should have enough fire- power to get the job done, if in fact the game goes ahead.
