younger girls on the team playing up in the minor grade for their first time it took us a while to settle resulting in Mayfield roar- ing into a 2 goal lead, but after 10 mins or so our girls settled and started to play some excellent football and started to get on top of the Mayfield girls. So much so that we went in at half time leading by 3:10 to 2:3 and well in control. The highlight of the first half was the support play and ability to retain position. The younger girls played as if they were seasoned campaigners at this grade and all made a huge con- tribution. At half time we could not find fault in any one players performance, we dominated all positions, even Rachel who ran in for two excellent taken points. This was a game where all the forwards scored, you can’t really ask for more. Our backs were steadfast and solid throughout. The second half was a tighter affair but very open and full

of running with the

girls from both teams cov- ering the length and breath of the pitch. With 10 mins to go Mayfield had pulled us back to four points 3:6 to 3:10 but we regained our composure on the ball and finished up on a score line of Midleton 3-15 to Mayfield’s 3-6. It was an excellent team per- formance with great spirit and camaraderie, very well done girls. Team: Rayanna Power, Claudia Kearney, Deirdre

Corcoran, Roisin O’Cal- laghan, Abby Quirke (1- 3), Vivienne Gleeson (0- 1), Denise Collins, Molly Beausang (1-6), Aoife Franklin (0-2), Rhea Buck- ley, Katie Horgan (1-1) and Rachel Quirke (0-2). Next up is St Colmans in

game in two weeks when we travelled to Togher on Saturday morning to take on the Barrs. 35 young

Magpies made the trip

and each got three games over the hour. There were great skills, effort and some really fine scores from our lads throughout

games. As always we had great support from parents which is appreciated. Fe 10 After the summer break

our boys made the trip to Ovens last weekend for the latest Rebel Óg football match against Eire Óg. Despite the numbers bring down due to the summer holidays, we still had 23 boys making up two teams. Both games were competitive

very with some

lovely scores and teamwork on display. Then on Sat- urday last

the Fé10 boys

were on the road again with a trip to Ballincollig as we welcomed the return of the Rebel Óg hurling league. We had 25 boys proudly wearing the black and white making up two hurling teams. Again, the lads showed fantastic en- thusiasm and skill in both matches. Well done to all involved and keep up the hurling practice at home. Thanks again to all the parents who were able to come along and support. Fe 12 After accepting an in-

vitation from Courcey Rovers to take part in the Johnny Murray Shield competition we set off on Saturday morning last for Ballinspittle. It was a four team competition with the hosts, Bishopstown Agha- da and Midleton run on a

all the

league system. In warm sunshine we faced Bishop- stown in our first match, earlier in the year we had been beaten by them in the league so the

were very determined to do themselves justice this time around. We started at a frantic pace maintaining the pressure on our oppo- nents until

the half time

whistle where we led on a score of three points to one. Our second half per- formance was very impres- sive

with excellent team

work and work ethic com- bined with no little skill and saw us run out deserved winners on a score line of 2.11 to 0.03.

break we faced the hosts, a disastrous start to this game saw us trail 1.04 to no score after only eight minutes of an only 15 min half, this was a real test of charac- ter and belief inch by inch our lads battled their way back into the game and incredibly we

managed

to get on level terms half time 2.04 apiece. With re- newed confidence we took to the field for the second half in a game of extreme- ly high quality hurling the lads showed their full array of

skills hooking blocking

tackling and sheer grit to win out on a score line of 4.07 to 2.07. It was all to play for in the last match as we faced our East Cork neighbours Aghada. This was a very intense encoun- ter with us in control in most sectors in the first half but the lads efforts were not reflected on the score

board, we missed some lads After a short

scoring opportunities but fatigue was now a factor, it was a one point lead for us at half time with a score of 1.02 to 0.04. The final 15 mins was keenly contest- ed with both sides giving their all. Aghada took the lead for the first time in the match with seven minutes to go but the magpies dug deep and got their noses in front as the final min- utes ticked by. At the final whistle we came out on top with a score line of Mid- leton 2.05 v Aghada 1.05. After joyous scenes we headed off to accept the Johnny Murray Shield it was great to see the elation on the faces of these young players after putting a ti- tanic effort throughout the day this was just reward for their efforts. After hurling for over 90 mins incredibly all our scores a total of 8 goals and 23 points came from play. A big thanks to all the

supporters who gave great encouragement

through-

out the competition. Thanks to Courcey Rovers for the invitation and hos- pitality. Untimely this was a day for players coming of age … Magpies Abu. Panel: Ben Fitzpatrick,

This week our league

matches resume we play St Nicks in Football on Tues- day evening and Blackrock in hurling on Thursday. Fe 13 On Wednesday evening

the magpies travelled to Kinsale

for a must win

game of football to keep our campaign going to qualify for a semi final spot. It was an ideal evening for a game of ball with virtu- ally no wind. We got off to a flyer of a start with the ball in the back of the net just after throw in. Our midfielders worked very well together and kept the supply of ball into the for- ward line constant. The halftime score was Mid- leton 4-3 to Kinsale 0-1. They came out fighting in the second half and got the first four scores putting the backs under serious pres- sure. However a goal for the Magpies seemed to get things back on track and we finished out the game very well with the final score line was 5-7 to 1-6. The mentors would like to thank the lads for putting in a super performance on the night and also would like to thank all the parents for traveling on the night. Panel as follows Tiernan O’ Connell, Zach Smith, Darragh Aherne, Darragh Scanlon, Eoin Higgins, Adam Collins, Alex Molo- ney, Tadgh Bohane, Os- car Brennan, Rory Lester,
