PIHC: Round 2 Cloyne v Youghal Cloyne 1-20
Youghal. Youghal wasted a few
Youghal 2-13
Pairc Uí Chinnide in Killeagh housed the meeting of Cloyne and Youghal in the Premier Intermediate
Hurling
championship on last Fri- day night. This East Cork derby had the makings of a great game and it did not disappoint with both sides serving up an excit- ing encounter. For Youghal the pros-
pect of a quick return to senior ranks will have to wait for another year as Cloyne
dominated the
second half and at the fin- ish ran out deserving win- ners after overcoming a poor start. Youghal on the other hand had a dream start with James O’Ma- hony racing through to hit a goal inside 30 sec- onds. Cloyne
respond-
ed with a point from an Ashley Walsh free while Diarmuid O’Sullivan also pointed from play. It was end to end stuff
as Bill
Cooper raised a white flag for Youghal, with Alan Frahill-O’Connor and Leigh Desmond fol- lowing suit. Cloyne
were work-
ing hard to stay in touch with Walsh landing his second free, but Youghal were shading things at this stage with Barry Ring landing a point, before Cloyne got a huge boost with Diarmuid O’Sulli- van finishing a rebound to the net after Richard Cunningham had done well
Walsh. While
nehy saw Cloyne hit the front for the first time. It was now being put up to Youghal to respond and they did with four unan- swered points as Barry Ring, Leigh Desmond, Alan Frahill-O’Con- nor and Brett
Molo-
ney fired over to open a three-point lead. Cloyne who were
playing with
a slight breeze finished the half strongly with Ashley Walsh pointing after Paudie O’Sullivan was fouled, while Walsh shot his first from play in the 31st
minute to leave
Cloyne trailing by 1-8 to 1-9 at half time with an exciting second half in prospect. It did not pan out that
way as Cloyne who had brought on Colm O’Sul- livan and Chris Smith before the break, put Paudie O’Sullivan to cen- tre -back with Brian Mi- inihane moving to mid- field and it proved to be a master stroke by Killian Cronin as O’Sullivan was master of all he surveyed, and he was like a magnet as he attracted the ball to him. Youghal who had made several strong runs through the middle in the opening half, suddenly saw their route to goal blocked off and it was Cloyne that began to get on top. Diarmuid O’Sullivan
to save from Brian Daragh
O’Connell replied with a point for Youghal, an- other Ashley Walsh free left Cloyne trailing by just a point 1-4 to 1-5 after a hectic opening quarter, where Youghal looked the better side with Nigel Ro- che, Leigh Desmond and Andrew Joyce showing up well. The pace dropped a lit-
tle in the second quarter as both sides began to get to grips with one another, but two points from play from Brian Walsh and team captain Keith Den-
had the sides level while Ian Cahill put Cloyne back into a lead that they would not surrender with Ciaran Mullins and a long range Paudie O’Sullivan free extending their ad- vantage. O’Sullivan with another free and Ashley Walsh from play moved Cloyne into a five-point lead, before Youghal got a shot in the arm when Bill Cooper got inside the defence to goal. An- drew Joyce followed with a point and we thought it was game on again going into the final quarter with just a point between the sides with Cloyne lead- ing by 1-14 to 2-10 for

chances as they went from scores from distance that did not come off, while Cloyne on the other hand worked the ball in closer with Ciaran Mullins and Paudie O’sullivan landing points. Cloyne were bat- tling for every ball as if their lives depended on it, but Youghal did not show the same hunger in that final quarter with Colm O’Sullivan and Keith Dennehy landing points for Cloyne in response to scores from James O’Ma- hony and Brett Molo- ney for Youghal to keep Cloyne’s noses in front coming down the home straight. The
seasiders really
needed a goal but a stal- wart Cloyne rear-guard in front of the depend- able Donal Óg Cusack in goal handled all that was thrown at them with Youghal’s only reward being a 28th
minute point
from sub Brendan Ring. Cloyne closed in on a fa- mous victory with points from Diarmuid O’Sulli- van and Michael Cahill as time ran out for Youghal, who were a little flat in that second half. In con- trast Cloyne were full of energy and in the finish, they ran out deserving winners to set up a third- round meeting with Fr O’Neill’s while Youghal will face Aghada in the relegation battle.
