Thursday, August 23rd

AET in Ovens on .

of this year’s minor hurling

Carrig bowed out champion-

ship after a valiant ef- fort came up a point short at the end of ex- tra time in Ovens last Thursday. Carrig were

slow

out of the blocks with Sean Walsh’s opening free the only Carrig score in the first fif- teen minutes. In that time Sam Maguires had built a seven point lead, scoring 1-5. A second Sean Walsh free put Carrig back on the

scoreboard

before fifteen-year old corner-forward, Justin Oke cut inside brilliantly to raise Carrig’s only goal of

the night. Maguires responded with two further points, one from a penalty, before Justin Oke notched Carrig’s third point. Sam Maguires

and

Sean Walsh traded placed balls to see out the half, Carrig trailing 1-8 to 1-4 but with the advantage of the breeze in the sec- ond half. The

second half

began with Carrig on the front foot and hurling much more freely. A Folasaide point and two Sean Walsh frees brought Carrig within one af- ter ten minutes. Sam Maguires responded with a brace of their own scores but then Carrig took their first lead since the open- ing minute

through

a James Mulcahy strike and three more perfect placed balls from Walsh. Carrig 1-11 Maguires 1-10 with five minutes left. Maguires levelled the game in the 56th minute and but Car- rig stole ahead with a fine Walsh score from

play. That was almost enough to win the match but Maguires pulled level in the 63rd minute and the game was headed for extra time. Carrig were much

the better of the two sides in the first half of extra time

and

emerged at the turn- around with a one point lead; 1-15 to 1-14. Adrien Browne, Sean Walsh and John Carroll were the Car- rig scorers. That lead was extended by one last Walsh free but it was Sam Magu- ires who finished the stronger scoring the final three points. It was a tough loss

to take but well done to our minor hurlers and management team who have put in incredible effort all year. Scorers: S. Walsh

0-11 (0-9f), J. Oke 1-1, J. Mulcahy, A. Browne, D. Fola- saide and J. Carroll 0-1 each.
