Cobh 1-15 Sarsfield 0-11
Derek Kiely reports The action continued in
the East Cork Oil Spon- sored Junior “A” hurling championship on Saturday afternoon when Cobh took on Sarsfields in the third of the quarter-final pairings at the well- appointed Car- rigtwohill venue. This was Sarsfields third squad, but they were still a decent outfit and stuck to
Murphy had Cobh in front by 0-4 to 0-2 after the opening quarter with John Barry getting the second point for Sarsfields. By half time Cobh led
by 1-6 to 0-6 with their goal coming from Liam Greaney who saw his shot deceive
Cathal Duggan their task throughout
what was an entertain- ing enough contest, that swung in Cobh’s favour when David Dawson was dismissed with ten minutes remaining. At that
stage
just, a goal separated the sides and it was all still to play for.
Cobh had begun well with Cian Spriggs opening their account while Adam McCarthy had their first point from play. It took Sarsfields ten minutes to get on the board through Ross Hogan and points from Jack Ronan and Lee
in the Sarsfields goal. Still Sarsfields were battling well and four points from free-taker Tom Mullins had them back in the hunt, with Cian Spriggs also landing a free and a 65 to leave Cobh ahead by 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time. Jack Ron- an had a point for Cobh on the restart, but Danny Allen and David Crowley replied for Sarsfields who were now hurling much better. Cobh were solid at the back with Kieran His- ton and Alan Walley get- ting in an amount of good work. For Sarsfields Joe Barry was solid at the back along with Paul Goggin and with Danny Allen and David
Dawson hitting points it was 1-10 to 0-10 going into the final quarter. Cobh sub Conor Farrell had a good point before Dave Dawson was red carded for a frontal challenge and with a nu- merical advantage Cobh began to extend their lead with Conor Farrell, Cian Spriggs with two points and Adam McCarthy with his second of the evening moving Cobh clear with only a Tom Mullins point in reply for Sarsfields who saw their challenge peter out after the sending off. Cobh will now meet Rus- sell Rovers but will need to show further improvement if they want to secure their spot in the final. Cobh: C Spriggs 0-6 (0-5f 0-1
