Russell Rovers 1_13.
Erins Own. 1_11 Rovers continued on
their journey to go one
step further than last year in the Jamesy Kelleher Cup with a hard fought win on a superbly laid out pitch in
Aghada. The game started with tough physical exchanges being the order of the day and here Rov- ers were not to be found wanting with them launch- ing the first attack which just went
wide.Erins Own had the added advantage
of the an enormous puck from their goalkeeper and this put pressure on the back three
Eoghan.Chris and Kevin O’Brien where Chris Ruddy was to give an exhibition of full back play that hasn’t been seen in Rovers land for many
years.Rovers opened the scoring after 2 minutes thru the hurl
of Fintan
Murray after great support play from his fellow marks- men Josh and
Bud.It was to be 9 minutes before Rov- ers scored again but this seven minute period was where Erins Own applied ferocious pressue but the Rovers defence stood firm with gladiator Ruddy at
the
helm.Rovers were only to give away two points in this period of play before Fintan latched onto a long ball from Kevin O’Brien and split the
posts. For the next ten minutes both sides were guilty of missing what looked like scorable points but to be fair players didn’t have much time on the ball with the tight marking being carried out by both
sides.Kieran Walsh and Brian Whelehan at mid- field started to win some good quality ball and this was the launch pad for Josh and Bud to terrorize the Erins Own defence with two excellent points between
them.Rovers for

to 0-6. Our defence was well on top, with Darren Cusack commanding in goals, the Motherway full-back line (Dermot, Barry and Kieran (Daly)) solid, and the half- back line of Dylan Cole- man, Colin Cunningham and Adrian Galvin mop- ping up everything around them. By half-time, we led by 3-9 to 0-9, although the wind was sufficiently strong to cause supporters to won- der if a nine-point
lead saw
our Junior B squad engaged in a high noon shoot-out with Cobh in Cloyne in Round 2 of the champi- onship. Before a ball was thrown in our team had to reverse their jerseys to avoid a colour clash with Cobh. Our opponents started well and had two points scored against
the strong wind
before our team settled. Andrew Leahy’s first goal on four minutes helped that settling process, as he finished a move that had begun with Barry Mother- way at full-back clearing to Luke Fogarty who delivered to Martin Fitzgerald whose effort was saved but finished by Andrew. On six minutes a similar finish from An- drew (through Luke and Olin Hennessy) gave us a 2-1 to 0-2 lead, and ten minutes later when Andrew pulled overhead on a ball delivered by Colm Crowley following a Colin Cunning- ham pass, the lead was 3-3
would be sufficient. Not to worry, the second half per- formance was perhaps even more impressive, with great teamwork and honest ef- fort continuing throughout the pitch. Paul Keniry and Jack Merkushev (he scored our first and last points) continued to work tirelessly at midfield, while up front Andrew’s
continued hav-
oc-making and score-get- ting was well supported by Luke, Martin, Olin and Stephen Byrne, while Colm Crowley used all his hurling brain to pop up all over the pitch and take the clever options in distribution and positioning throughout the second half. Even though Cobh had the wind, their shooting was awry, so much that we outscored them also in the second half – 1-6 to 0-6 – with Luke’s goal on 56 minutes closing out the game, just minutes after a wonderful full-length div- ing save from Darren. All in all, this was a heartening

the next ten minutes were to go three points to the good with the half back line of

With Rovers now 2 points to the good with half time approaching goalkeeper Ian Smiddy was to pull off a tremendous point blank save to keep Rovers lead of two before Josh added the last point of the half after Kieran Walsh was hauled down as he ran on one of his straight lines at

When trying to figure
out what happened to our Under 16s in this match in Páirc Uí Chinnéíde on Tuesday evening last it ap- pears that we were, to steal a phrase, “blinded by the light”. Our first half per- formance in daylight was excellent, with Eoin Bren- ner rattling in two goals, the second just before half time an outstanding strike, and Christian Coughlan adding 1-2 of his own in an impressive display. This gave us a 3-6 to 1-6 lead, and all seemed well. Then the sun dropped, the lights came on, and Bandon took over for the second half, outscoring us by 1-11 to 0-2. Our final score came on 37 minutes from Paudie Mackey (who worked hard all through the game) and while we did continue to pressure Bandon, all our attacks were either snuffed out by a strong last line of defence for Bandon or end- ed in narrow wides or wide wides (but all wide, regard- less)! So full credit to Ban- don who headed home with their two points, and food
Brian Whelehan The sec- ond period started
with
a lot of sloppy play from Rovers and Erins Own took full advantage with 1_2 without reply before Luke sent over a point after good exchanges be- tween all the forwards after 11 minutes to leave only one between the sides and 15 minutes to play.A great individual point from Bri- an Hartnett saw the sides level again and all to play for.James Aherne replaced Daniel O’Brien and Kevin Moynihan replacing Jack McGrath who both gave good accounts of them- selves all

and send worrying signals to the Rovers following. Rovers were now guilty of some poor shot deci- sions and this may have cost them dearly were it not for a wonder goal from Fintan Murray in the third minute of extra time. I be- lieve now from talking to the man above Fintan was hiding in the clouds where he swooped on the ball to strike home and level the game. Two more wonder strikes from Luke and Josh left Rovers victorious at the final whistle and send them into a semi clash against Cobh next Saturday 1st September at

THANK YOU Páirc Uí Chinnéíde
looked resplendent on Fri- day evening last as we host- ed the Premier Intermedi- ate Hurling Championship second round match be- tween Cloyne and Youghal. Many thanks to the grounds staff led by Seán Treacy for ensuring that all was well for the hurlers and match officials, and to the many club volunteers, led by cathaoirleach Padraig McGrath and rúnaí Mary Fitzgibbon, who assisted with tickets, parking and stewarding, ensuring that all was well for supporters. Only one crowd went home happy but that was some- thing of which we as hosts were not in control! Elation for Cloyne, disappointment for Youghal. The vagaries of sport!
