JAHC: Q/F Russell Rovers v Erin’s Own - “Smash and grab sees Russell Rovers defeat Erin’s Own”

Russell Rovers 1-13 Erin’s Own 1-11

Derek Kiely Reports The first of the three

remaining quarter finals in the East Cork Oil Sponsored Junior “A” hurling championship took place in Rostellan, last Saturday afternoon when last year’s defeat- ed finalist Russell Rov- ers took on Erin’s Own. In a match that ended in a blaze of excitement Russell Rovers snatched a glorious victory from the jaws of impending defeat as they scored 1-2

in injury time to rescue the result. In truth Erin’s Own

were the better side and had they taken their chances then vic- tory would have been theirs. As it was they still looked good until that last gasp purple patch from Russell Rovers that got them over the line. Russell Rovers had begun well with Fintan Murray opening their account, but Alan Bow- en and Willian Fenton replied for the Caherlag

outfit. Bowen and former Cork minor captain To- mas O’Leary extended the lead and while Mur- ray was again on target for Russell Rovers they trailed by 0-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quar- ter.

In a low scoring game

every score counted and by half time Erin’s Own were now playing catch up as Russell Rovers improved greatly and points from Fintan Mur- ray, Josh Beausang 0-4 and Brian Hartnett had the Shanagarry outfit in front by 0-8 to 0-5 at half time. On the resumption it

was all change once more as Erin’s Own got back

on top with two points from Alan Bowen, while Willian Fenton slammed in a goal. Indeed, Erin’s Own should have had a second goal but Cathal Linehan took the wrong option when he ran into trouble, instead of pass- ing to Fenton who was free in front of goal. Still Erin’s Own were hurl- ing the better and while Luke Murray and Brian Hartnett got points, it was all still to play for go- ing into the final quarter. Erin’s Own were by now on top with Barry Óg Murphy, Dara Twom- ey, Cathal Linehan and Alan Bowen all playing well. Indeed, Bowen who had missed a few free’s

pointed two long range efforts and then cut over a sublime side-line ball to put Erin’s own 1-10 to 0-10 ahead with just minutes remaining. Josh Beausang did snag a free for the Shanagarry men, but Dara Twomey cancelled this out with a massive effort for Erin’s own from inside his own half. Russell Rovers were in

trouble and when Kieran Murphy pulled off a bril- liant save in the 60th

min-

ute it looked as if Erin’s own might just hold out. However, six minutes of injury time was signalled, and Russell Rovers threw all they had into attack. Finally, in the 4th

minute

of time added on Russell Rovers got through for a priceless goal with Fintan Murray hitting a superb shot to the net to level matters. The force was now with Russell Rovers and points from Luke Murray and Josh Beau- sang secured the victory that was certainly not looking likely at the end of normal time, but in time added on they pre- vailed and will now meet Cobh in the semi-final. Russell Rovers: J Beausang 0-6f, F

Murray 1-3, B Hartnett 0-2 and L Murray 0-2. Erin’s Own: A Bowen 0- 8 (0-7f 0-1

S/L), W Fenton 1-1, T O’Leary and D Twomey
