Wait Goes on For Cork as Tipperary Snatch U21 All Ireland Title Cork 1-16

Tipperary 3-13 Cork failed to capture

their first All- Ireland U21 hurling title since 1998, when they were pipped by Tipperary in Pairc Na Gael, Limerick last Sun- day evening in the Bord Gais Energy sponsored de- cider. Denis Ring’s charges had easily accounted for the Premier boys in the Munster Final, but after a semi-final win over Gal- way, this Tipperary side had redeemed themselves and were itching for an- other crack off Cork who had easily accounted for Wexford, so the weight of expectation was clearly on Cork’s shoulders to deliver a long-awaited win in this grade for the county. Cork made one late

change with Conor Cala- hane coming in at midfield in place of Ger Millerick, while Tipperary had five changes from the side that lost to Cork in the Munster Final. Conditions too were completely different with a strong wind favouring Tip- perary in the opening half. It looked as if it might

be a difficult evening for Cork as in the opening quarter Tipperary began well with Jake Morris get-

ting the opening point. While Robbie O’Flynn equalised, it was to be the only score for Cork in that opening quarter. Tipper- ary on the other hand had points from Jerome Cahill 0-2, Jake Morris, Cian Darcy and a penalty goal in the 13th

minute from

Jake Morris after Mark Coleman had taken down Mark Kehoe. Trailing by seven points, Cork were being asked some serious questions, but they came up with the answers with Conor Calahane leading the charge with two quick points. Cork were now in full flow with points from Declan Dalton (free) Jack O’Connor, Robbie O’Flynn and Shane King- ston closing the gap to a single point. Cork then hit the front when Conor Ca- lahane surged through to hit the net and after being behind, Cork were now in front and looking in con- trol. Declan Dalton and Robbie O’Flynn added points, while Paudie Fee- han and Jerome Cahill had late points to leave Tipper- ary trailing by 1-7 to 1-9 at the interval. Having played against

the strong breeze Cork were in a strong position coming out for the sec- ond half and one thought it was theirs to lose really although Tipperary had the opening two points to draw level with Colin English and Jake Morris getting the points. Cian Darcy then put Tipperary in front as the Premier side certainly upped their game.

Declan Dalton from a

free had the sides level as Brian Turnbull was intro- duced to the Cork attack with Liam Healy mak- ing way. Tipperary were not going away with Ger Browne putting Tipperary back in front with 20 min- utes remaining. Jake Mor- ris extended the Tipperary lead to two points as Cork were fortunate that refer- ee John Keenan booked the wrong player as Mark Coleman escaped picking up a second yellow with Eoghan Murphy booked instead. Cork drew level again

with Daragh Fitzgibbon and Brian Turnbull point- ing as the game went into the final ten minutes with the outcome still very much in the balance. Ste- phen Nolan then had a Tipperary goal with seven minutes remaining and it was now really being put up to Cork with the clock

now against them. A point- ed free from Declan Dal- ton closed the gap to two points and with just three minutes remaining Brian Turnbull made it a one- point match. Cork won a free in the 59th

minute and

Declan Dalton obliged to bring the sides level once more as five minutes of added time was signalled. Cork edged back in

front with a point from Tim O’Mahony with just three minutes remaining. Disaster then struck for the Rebels with Conor Stakelum bundling the ball over the line for a third Tipperary goal. A point from sub David Gleeson was the icing on the Tip- perary cake as time ran out for a Cork side that looked to be in pole position at half time, but it was the battling qualities of Tip- perary with Bill McGrath and Robert Byrne out- standing in defence that won through. Cork will wonder where it all went wrong as from being in pole position they failed to push on with Tipperary bridging an eight-year gap to capture their 10th

and break the hearts of Cork.
