JAHC: Q/F Carrig Na bhFear v St Ita’s - Harnedy Points the way for St Ita’s
Carrig Na bhFear 1-13 St Ita’s 1-16
Derek Kiely Reports
The last of the quarter
finals in the East Cork Oil Sponsored Junior “A” hurling championship took place on Saturday evening at the Midleton venue where St Ita’s and Carrig Na bhFear battled it out for the remaining semi-final spot that was on offer to the winner. St Ita’s had Cork cap-
tain Seamie Harnedy back on duty and with- in a minute he had the sliotar in the Carrig net to give St Ita’s a dream starts. Harnedy was the main man throughout this contest but on this occasion, he had a su- perb supporting cast with Ciaran and Daragh O’Brien, Sean Supple, Cathal Deane and young Daniel Hickey all play- ing their part in a contest that was the best of the three Saturday games. Aaron Dorgan got
Carrig na bhFear off the mark but Cathal Deane, and two Seam- ie Harnedy points had St Ita’s ahead but a 10th minute goal from David Sweeney closed the gap and at the end of the opening quarter St Ita’s were two points in front after Daniel hickey con- verted a free to make it 1-4 to 1-2 in favour of the Pilmore men. By half -time the gap was still two points as Hickey, Harnedy with two and Cathal Deane were on target for St Ita’s while David Sweeney, John Forde with three points and Timmy Geaney were on target for Carrig Na bhFear who trailed by 1-6 to 1-8 at half time. John Forde was the
main threat in attack for Carrig who shot sev- eral poor wides. St Ita’s were much more co- hesive in attack as they
tried to get Harnedy on the end of the move and he obliged with their opening two points of the second half. While John Forde had two from play, Carrig were find- ing it hard to breach the St Ita’s defence where Mark Coleman can out with an amount of ball. Sean Supple got a point for St Ita’s and at the three – quarter mark St Ita’s were still in front by 1-11 to 1-10 and it was all still to play for. Car- rig Na BhFear emptied their bench and made several positional chang- es but all to no avail as only John Forde was able to make any inroads in attack, and he had their entire second half tally. In contrast St Ita’s were also dependant on Seam- ie Harnedy but he was coming in on the moves after great work by his team to set him up and he finished with aplomb shooting four points in the final quarter to bring his tally to 1-10 for the evening. It might have been more had he been on free-taking duty, but he only took over that in the final minutes as Daniel Hickey convert- ed three from seven on the night. It mattered little on this occasion as St Ita’s move forward to a semi-final meeting with Lisgoold this com- ing weekend. Four Jun- ior clubs Russell Rovers v Cobh and St Ita’s v Lisgoold will contest the semi-finals and all four will feel that they can win the “Jamsey Kelle- her Cup”
Carrig Na bhFear: J Forde 0-10 (0-7f, 0-1
