EIGHTH GRADE
The Eighth Grade curriculum is centered on American history. Students take five full-year (7-mod) classes: American History, Integrated Science IV, American Literature, Math, and Foreign Language. In addition, they take single-mod classes in Catholic Christianity, Physical Education, and Studio Art, as well as an optional Computer Science course called Creative Computing 2. They also have a daily X-Bin course.
American Literature
This is a comprehensive English program based on American literature. It covers the fundamentals of reading, writing, grammar, and literary analysis. Students study poetry, memoir, short stories, biography, and novels portraying the American experience, as well as writing formal essays and creative works. Students participate in the Oral History Project in the spring, during which they interview and write the biography of a resident at the Rogue Valley Manor.
American History
This course presents the history of the United States thematically, with an emphasis on the American Revolution; slavery and the Civil War; Native Americans and westward migration; America’s growing international involvement in the 20th century; and the Vietnam era. In collaboration with American Literature, students will complete an Oral History Project, which includes interviewing residents at a local retirement community, compiling their biographies, and presenting the completed written work.
Integrated Science IV
The Middle School Science curriculum is a four-year integrated program beginning in 5th grade. Students explore earth and space science, physical science, life science, and engineering. The course is hands-on and inquiry-driven.
Pre-Algebra
This course uses the inquiry-based Connected Mathematics 3 series and emphasizes solving problems in context. We explore linear relationships, ratio and proportion, integer arithmetic, probability, data analysis, and geometry. We also use ALEKS, an individualized online learning and assessment system, to help students learn, practice, and master numeracy and arithmetic skills.
Algebra I
This is a standard high-school level introductory algebra course. We explore topics including equations and inequalities in single and multiple variables, graphs of functions and relations, exponents, and rational algebraic expressions. We also use ALEKS, an individualized online learning and assessment system, to help students learn, practice, and master numeracy and arithmetic skills.
Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra
Geometry This standard course in Euclidean geometry uses the Discovering Geometry text. Topics covered include right triangle trigonometry; inductive and deductive reasoning; circles; geometric construction; area and volume; and coordinate geometry. We also use ALEKS, an individualized online learning and assessment system, to help students learn, practice, and master algebra and arithmetic skills.
Prerequisite: Algebra I
