How to show the best of our school, create a lasting memento, and be creative at the same time! Experience the action of a “newsroom” during which you will plan, identify “relevant and time sensitive events and happenings”, collaborate, go on photo shoots, and write captions and editorial. Be connected to an actual publishing house with real deadlines and a tangible artifact: Come and publish the YEARBOOK!!! Join Yearbook during which you will learn the ins-and-outs of publishing work, photography, and design–to name a few. Participants must commit to 1 bin and 3 additional 1/2 X-bins of your choice. Instructor approval required to take this class.

Introduction to Film Production


This course introduces the fundamental elements of film artistry and production. Topics include film styles, history, and production techniques as well as the social values reflected in film art. Students will not only get a chance to be creative but they will learn industry techniques and professional understanding.

Stop-Motion: Clay Animation


and Lego World This is a craft and film class, in which students will learn process of creating animated images by crafting scenes and characters out of clay, paper, recyclable materials, or Legos, etc.; students will write a treatment, develop and draw a story board, and produce fluid movements through digital photography, employing film editing and edit manipulations to produce a 2-4 min. stop animation film for a final screening. This is a hands-on course in which students will create a film artifact. Aside from the creation work, lectures will explain techniques, highlight renowned artists, and provide historical backgrounds.

Painting: Landscape


and Color Theory This course offers students who have some art experience further encouragement and challenge. Painting can be a lifelong adventure and students will be given several assignments to hone their understanding of the media. Information on color theory, choices of painting tools, and styles of applying paint aid student’s confidence. Some possible assignments are landscape, still life, portraits, acrylics/mixed media on canvas, and true fresco on plaster. Students will have daily assignments to reinforce concepts and make plans for further growth. A final portfolio of work will assess development and record work for future art classes.

AIFF: Local Filmmakers Wanted


Make a festival-worthy student film for the Ashland Independent Film Festival! Learn hands-on filmmaking from package to plate: conceptualization, preproduction, production, and postproduction. This new and rare opportunity will be offered to St. Mary’s School students in the fall of 2017, one that dives directly into the making of a film, beginning with the essential question: When is an idea more than an idea? We will take an idea and develop it into a visual story, a process that demands focus, effort, and time.
