Industrialization and Empire:

Europe from 1780-1900 Beginning in 1800, over the span of the next 100 years, Europe saw its population double, its GDP quadruple, and its overseas colonial holdings increase by almost 9 million square miles (over one-fifth of the world’s land mass). For better or worse, this century of European ascendancy had profound and enduring effects on the rest of the globe. In this course, we will explore both the causes and the legacy of these rapid and dramatic changes. Primary source analysis will constitute a major focus of the course.
