The Nature of Technology: What It Is, How It Evolves,
Where It’s Going Most of us do not stop to ponder technology. When we think of “technology”, most of us probably picture smartphones and computers. We find these things and other technologies—such as automobiles,
air-
conditioning, and flush toilets—quite useful but those then fade to the background of our world. And yet is technology that creates and sustains that world and the realm our individual lives inhabit. In this course you will explore what, exactly, “technology” is, where it comes from, how it is developed, how it evolves, and where it’s taking us.

The Dirty Dozen: Guns, Religion, Protest, Crime and Punishment
in the U.S. Constitution The Amendments to the United States Constitution represent a list of priorities, ills and dreams that lay at the heart of the search for what Alexis de Tocqueville referred to as the “greatness and genius of America.” The Dirty Dozen is a seminar on the Bill of Rights plus the 14th and 18th Amendment. Through the examination and juxtaposition of history, legal theory and pop culture, students will come to learn about the genesis of these amendments and the ongoing debate over how they apply to those living in the United States.

Moral Dilemmas
In this course you will learn how to identify moral dilemmas and acquire some of the tools that help you solve them. We will then evaluate our moral reasoning by using some of the main philosophical ethical theories (utilitarianism, virtue ethics, Kantian ethics). You will be able to suggest topics that interest you. The objective of this class is to strengthen your analytic abilities necessary as a citizen and in your future professional and private lives.

The Medium and the Message: How to Know What’s True in the
Age of Information Overload The World Wide Web has provided us with the most accessible and efficient mass medium for the dissemination of information in human history. But that medium does not discern the truthfulness of the messages we are daily bombarded with via the news media, blogs, and social media. We must be able to do that. This course provides you with the framework, tools, and skills to determine good information from bad information, truth from lies, and understand how and why most information ebbs and flows within a gray area in between.
