SOCIAL STUDIES The Mod Abroad: Spain
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim art and architecture, literature, religion, philosophy, history, and culture will intertwine as we spend the entire module learning about Spain. While the topics covered will be varied and wide- ranging, the central focus will be on “La Convivencia,” the period in Spanish history when the “peoples of the book” lived together in productive harmony under both Christian and Muslim rulers. The course will begin in the St. Mary’s classroom, but finish with 11 days in Spain where we will visit Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Cordoba, Ronda, and Seville. The travel component is required for credit and includes an additional fee. Contact Kacey Dewing or Alastair Hunter for more information.

The American City
Anyone with a general familiarity of the modern world can, at a glance, tell the difference between a European city and one in the U.S., or even the difference between New York and Phoenix. But why? Why has the typical American city taken such a different shape than its European counterparts? And why, in some American cities, is an automobile vital while in others it is almost a nuisance to own? This course looks at the origins of European settlement to find the answers to some of these questions, then sweeps over the past 250 years to look at how “American Exceptionalism” has done so much to influence the shape of our cities.
