The basics of design (line, shape, form, value, texture, and color) are universal building blocks used in all visual arts, from fashion design to architecture, from computer animation to web pages. Through experimentation and instruction, design students will develop strategies for expressing visual ideas. This class is useful for all human beings and required for advanced art students.

Ceramics Draw! Paint! Print!

From Idea to Visual Image This class is for students who have used art materials and who seek to develop artistic voice. The class begins with drawing as visual communication, especially for non-verbal ideas. Students will draw for the first ten hours, then introduce paint and color as options for further expression. After these abstract exercises, students will develop their own theme to use for printing. Techniques in monoprinting, linocuts and collagraph will be options for the final products. Students complete this class by making repeated editions of their idea, which may be recognizable or abstract, but is carefully considered throughout the process.

Students in Ceramics work with clay to make functional and non-functional art. All forms of hand building are taught and students are expected to master the how-to and why of each style. Beyond the construction of their work, students will peruse the history of ceramics around the world finally focusing on contemporary ceramic artists. Students keep sketchbooks for notes, written reflections and documentation. The final assignment is digital portfolio and critique of each student’s work. Students may take this class twice to work on projects that are developed through research, discussion and planning. Working with the instructor, students create a timeline and action plan for their idea. Assessment for this class includes written documentation, evidence of observation of other artists, and final presentation with critique.

Art and Society:

Contemporary and Public Art Students in this class consider big questions like, “Who decides what is Art? Or what is good? Are all people artists? How does art operate in our world and how did it work in the past?” Beyond looking at historic and contemporary artists, students also make their own art. Work created might provoke discussion, probe deep questions, stir emotions, or signal a call to action. Or the work could be private and personal. Students will also collaborate on a piece of public art for display. This class requires thoughtful participation and will suit anyone willing to work with art supplies and ideas. Homework addresses skill-building such as observational drawing and background reading.
