In this college level art course, students work towards developing mastery of advanced art skills, including problem solving, the elements and principles of design, specific art media, art techniques, and related content. Students address three essential components in their portfolios: quality, concentration, and breadth. Students submit this body of work to the College Board for review during the AP exam week in May. One-Act Play
St. Mary’s is blessed with numerous students who have theatrical talent. Some have gone on to major in theater in college and then gone into the profession. One-Act Plays provides an ideal forum for the beginner who wants to see if theater is for him or herself, or for the veteran who wants to keep sharpening skills. One-act plays fit well into the St. Mary’s culture because they focus intensely upon individual actors, require less rehearsal time, and can be staged without elaborate costumes or sets. This class culminates with a small scale production of the one-act.

Arts and Crafts:
Better Than Pinterest Feeling the need to create but not sure where to start? This course takes students through a colorful, creative journey into traditional Arts and Crafts. Almost exclusively hands-on, students work on projects from categories such as papier mache, beading, wire, fabric, papermaking, pop-up books, painted furniture, marbled paper, or altered books. Students are challenged to develop their own skills and understanding of serious craftsmanship and will include field trips to OSF and artist studios.

Paint: Liquid Color
This course offers students who have some art experience further encouragement and challenge. Painting can be a lifelong adventure and students will be given several assignments to hone their understanding of the media. Information on color theory, choices of painting tools, and styles of applying paint aid student’s confidence. Some possible assignments are watercolor painting/landscape, still life, portraits, acrylics/mixed media on canvas, and true fresco on plaster. Students will have nightly assignments to reinforce concepts and make plans for further growth. A final portfolio of work will assess development and record work for future art classes.
