SCIENCE Turning the Tables

on Natural Disasters Natural disasters are the misunderstood teenager of the physical world. Almost always viewed as destructive forces with little or no benefit, floods, wild fires, earthquakes, volcanoes, to mention just a few, are actually essential to the well being of the planet. In this course students will learn to sympathize with the “bad boys” of nature.

Climate Change, GMOs,

and Science Denial Has everyone gone crazy?! What has happened to the lofty, once-unassailable position science held after Sputnik? We will look at primary research in some of today’s hot-button issues related to science and currently under fire by so-called science deniers. We will look at evidence available online, learn how to analyze for bias, and learn to collect our own data. We will also bring in speakers who are experts from the field to give us the latest, most up-to-date information in these areas. Above all, we will do this in a safe environment where students will be encouraged to express themselves, listen to each others respectfully, and learn to identify and analyze bias. Students will have freedom deciding how to present their information and research (written, oral, etc).
