Language and Culture The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication by applying the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. This course engages students in the exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts, developing students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products, practices, and perspectives. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish.

Latin I
The three-volume Oxford Latin Course follows the life of the famous Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (“Horace” in its Anglicized form) from his upbringing in Venusia, a small village in southeastern Italy, through his education in Rome and Athens, through his ill-fated allegiance to Brutus in the civil war that followed the death of Julius Caesar, and finally to his reconciliation with the emperor Augustus and, through the latter’s patronage, to securing his place in Roman literature. The Latin texts consist of an ongoing narrative that can ultimately be considered a historical-fiction account of Horace’s life, and the first-year students will be concerned with the events of his boyhood, including his early schooling and his growing interest in both Greek and Roman literature.

Latin II
In the second-year Latin course the students will continue to follow the life of Horace from his departure from Venusia to his further schooling in Rome, the very heart of the empire. In the process the students will be introduced to legendary figures in Roman history and to everyday life in Rome, including its least attractive aspects (unsanitary living conditions, disease, overcrowding, etc.) and its wide-ranging achievements in the fields of architecture, engineering, oratory, jurisprudence, and statecraft, among many others. As always, the readings will be supplemented by documentaries, activities, additional readings, and other materials as a means of expanding and consolidating the information presented in the Latin texts.

LATIN + ARABIC Advanced Latin
Through the eyes of Horace the third-year Latin students will experience the turbulent period following the assassination of Julius Caesar as Horace tries to come to grips with the end of the Roman republic as well as the ensuing slaughter and chaos. These circumstances will cause him to leave Rome for Greece to study philosophy in Athens, but events will follow him there when Brutus arrives, and Horace will eventually find himself embroiled in the civil war (and on the losing side). In light of the historical period under consideration, the overriding questions that the students will consider throughout the year are these: What factors contribute to the decline and fall of a once-thriving civilization? And can this development be halted?
