RELIGION Religion 10: Faith and Diversity

Globalization is upon us. Contact with other societies, within and outside the U.S. is inevitable. The human brain is hardwired to fear the unfamiliar as part of its instinct toward self-preservation. Without education and exposure, fear will continue to dominate subconscious attitudes. The course is designed to expose students to the degree of diversity in the country and the world, and to help them understand that irrational fear cripples all of us. This is the required religion course for tenth grade students.

Religion 9: Faith and Solidarity

“Solidarity is action on behalf of the one human family, calling us to help overcome the divisions in our world. Solidarity binds the rich to the poor. It makes the free zealous for the cause of the oppressed. It drives the comfortable and secure to take risks for the victims of tyranny and war. It calls those who are strong to care for those who are weak and vulnerable across the spectrum of human life. It opens homes and hearts to those in flight from terror and to migrants whose daily toil supports affluent lifestyles. Peacemaking, as Pope John Paul II has told us, is the work of solidarity.” (Called To Global Solidarity International Challenges For U.S. Parishes, United States Catholic Conference, November 12, 1997) The Freshmen Religion course explores what it means to “stand with” those who are oppressed economically, politically, religiously, and racially, peace and justice always walk hand-in-hand, and understanding one’s own role in helping to create a just world will be at the center of this course’s reflection.

Religion 11:

Faith and Social Justice “How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads?… Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty”. —Pope John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, no. 50. Students will examine the causes and effects of poverty at the local and national level. They will spend time serving

the

marginalized at agencies like St. Vincent de Paul and Access Food Share. Students will reflect on their findings and service.

Religion 12:

Faith and Stewardship While the earth is “like a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us,” she now “groans in travail” because of the “irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her” (Pope Francis). This course will explore the history of the Church’s teachings on ecology, starting with St Francis and leading to the current Pope Francis, who has called to link the human family together through environmental conversation that centers on sustainable development. Students will examine the relationship between poverty and planetary fragility, the interconnectedness of all living things,

the benefits and drawbacks of

technoscience and the “technocratic paradigm”, the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress, the value proper to each creature, and the human meaning of ecology. Heeding Francis’ call for forthright and honest debate, students will shoulder the serious responsibility of drafting international and local policies that replace the throwaway culture with the proposal for a new sustainable and integral lifestyle.
