Warning issued over bogus callers posing as council workers
Renfrewshire residents are being warned about bogus callers posing as council workers to trick people into handing over money.
Renfrewshire Council has issued the urgent warning following an incident where an 84-year-old resident in Renfrew was approached by a man posing as a council employee asking to be paid to clear a blocked drain.
The man came to the resident’s door claiming to be from the council although he had no council identifi cation.
He told the resident he would need to pay £1000 to have the drain cleared. He also suggested that he could drive the resident to the bank to withdraw the cash.
A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “This is a despicable act, deliberately targeting an elderly resident. Thankfully, the resident realised there was something wrong and refused to hand over any money. He immediately alerted his landlord and contacted the police.
“The council would never turn up on someone’s door demanding money. Any employee of Renfrewshire Council, or employee of a fi rm sub-contracted by the Council, will carry identifi cation and be happy to show it to you before entering your home.
“Our advice is always that consumers should be wary of doorstep salespeople. Always ask for identifi cation and when paying someone to do a service or making a purchase, always ask for three quotations from reputable companies. Anyone approached by a suspected bogus caller is urged to contact the police immediately.”
Inverclyde Council Try Smoke Free Parks
Inverclyde Community Health and Care Partnership have discussed launching an innovative campaign to help reduce children’s exposure to smoke when using play facilities situated outside.
Adults will see signage encouraging them not to smoke near children’s play areas – the aim is to avoid exposing children to second hand smoke and potentially lowering the risk of them taking up the habit in later life. The signs will also include an anti litter message to
help reduce the likelihood of cigarette litter being discarded in or near the play areas.
The parks and play areas proposed for inclusion in the pilot include: Battery Park, Greenock; Coronation Park, Port Glasgow; Kings Street Park, Gourock and Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm.
The proposed pilot has been informed by results from the recent Citizens Panel Survey and backs our anti-smoking campaign as part of our health improvement initiative.
