Summer seasonal staff appointed

Finlaystone Head Ranger, David Finnis says ‘We are pleased that Stuart & Andrew Leslie are back with us again this summer as the car parking assistants working weekends & bank holidays and that Janette Dewhurst & Duncan McNeil will be joining us as Seasonal Countryside Rangers.

Janette, from Langbank, says ‘Hello, I’m one of the new seasonal rangers at Finlaystone Estate this summer. Having previously volunteered in conservation roles on the estate, I jumped at the opportunity to work here this season. I have a background in customer service and working with children and families, as well as having a keen interest in conservation and the natural environment. I look forward to working closely with the other rangers in maintaining this beautiful estate and in helping all visitors have a great time while with us.’

Duncan, from Paisley, says ‘Hi, I started off by volunteering as an Estate Worker/Ranger at Kelburn Castle & Country Centre, where I soon became involved in a wide variety of regeneration tasks such as glen clearing, improving public woodland access and bird nesting projects. I also had the opportunity of leading Ranger activities with the general public and local schools groups, such as sensory walks and the ever-popular mini beast tours.

I have now joined the team at Finlaystone Country Estate as a Seasonal Ranger, and in addition am looking forward to advancing my professional qualifications in the field of Countryside Management and Conservation. In my spare time you will often find me behind the camera lens photographing our wonderful animal and bird life, or playing guitar - music is my other great passion!’

Begonias are great for growing in pots, tubs, hanging baskets or at the front of the garden border and along with Fuchsias and Busy Lizzies provide splashes of summer colour from May to September. There are trailing varieties ideal for edging containers and upright for planting in the centre of containers or in the border. The tubers can be over wintered, lift in autumn before the first frosts, and dry them off. Dust with a fungicide and store in a frost-free place.
