Coffee Morning Raises Funds For Erskine
Erskine, the veterans’ charity, received a welcome boost to funds when Mrs Mary McCammon and Mrs Senga McCallum from St Cuthbert’s Church in Saltcoats popped into the charity’s home in Bishopton to donate a cheque for £900.
Past & Present Sergeant Majors Reunited
An Erskine veteran was delighted when he was presented with a framed piece of carpet by the Royal Marines. Sergeant Major Bowker, from the Royal Marines, made the presentation to ex Quarter Master Sergeant Major Joe Rorrison at the Erskine Home in Bishopton.
The carpet was cut from a specially made roll designed for Royal Marine Reserve Scotland based in Govan, and features the Globe and Laurel, the badge of the Royal Marines. The Globe and Laurel is a symbol of the Marines success in every quarter of the world and of the gallantry they displayed.
Joe donated some items of WWII memorabilia to the Sergeants Mess so that they can be viewed by generations of Marines to come. This was greatly appreciated and the Marines wanted to give something back to Joe that he would enjoy.
Erskine veteran Joe Rorrison said “I am delighted with the framed badge and grateful to RMR Scotland for this gift. I have asked for it to be put up in the Home so that other veterans can see it as well – especially those from the Navy, Army and RAF!!
The funds were raised through the church hav ing a coffee morn in g on 27th November last year. When the snow st a rt e d falling on the day of the coffee morn in g the ladies were unsure
as to how many people would brave the elements to come along. Happily they were not disappointed as many people turned up to show their support for Erskine.
Mrs McCammon said: “We enjoyed our visit to Erskine very much indeed and were very impressed with what is being achieved there!”
Lesley Miller, Erskine’s Deputy Head of Fundraising said: “We would like to thank the ladies of St Cuthbert’s for this wonderful donation. £900 is a great sum to have raised anytime but under the circumstances with the awful weather it makes it even more special.”
