local sports Castle Semple Rowing Club

On Saturday 19th March a composite crew from Castle Semple Rowing Club and Glasgow Rowing Club took part in the world’s largest Women’s Rowing

Regatta, The Women’s Eights Head of the River 2011 Tideway, 7km. From a Starting position of number 277 the crew over all fi nished 249th out of 303 boats and 9th out of 20 in their racing category in a very respectable time of 22.56.12 minutes. The race included the GB Olympic crew and was won over all by The Leander Rowing Club in 18.06.57minutes. An amazing experience made even more enjoyable due to the great weather!

There was a very good turnout of beavers, scouts

cubs, and

explorer scouts for the Founders Day service held at Houston and Kilellan Kirk.

The service was jointly conducted by the Rev Donald Campbell (Houston & Kilellan Kirk) and Rev Daniel McLaughlin (St Fillans RC Church) to celebrate the birthday of the founder of the Scout Movement Lord Baden Powell. Thanks go to both for taking part in the service and making it such a successful day. Scouts groups from across West Renfrewshire were present for the service and to take part in the parade of fl ags and presentation of the local colours.

Kilmacolm Scout Group

The cubs recently completed their Computer badge Stage II and are all now competent in a number of IT skills. The next badge will be the Fitness Badge and all cubs will be encouraged to improve physical fi tness over a 2 week period, so hopefully all the pancakes made and eaten by the cubs for Shrove Tuesday are but a distant memory!

All of the sections are looking forward to the spring and getting back outdoors with the cubs planning a bike ride through the Trossachs National Park in May.

Kilmacolm Scout Group goes from strength to strength with nearly 100 young people attending every week. We’re recently invested new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at Kilmacolm Primary School being entertained by a mini-Scouts pipe band. We have been very grateful to all the people helping us with activities and venues during the time of our Scout hall building work. The work is nearly fi nished and will be in a great shape for more fun and lively activities. The Cubs have recently achieved their Highland Challenge Badge ending in a walk equivalent in length to the height of Ben Nevis - 1344m, at night. The Scouts have returned from a tremendous weekend at Barnbrock camping with a selection of Highland Games for their Athlete’s badge amongst other great activities. More camping to come soon.

Parents are reminded that a clothing deposit box is now available in the Scout Hall and all unwanted or old clothes and shoes can be left when dropping children off each week. This is an ongoing fund raising initiative and will help towards the running costs of the group.

Houston Cubs also organised the annual district General knowledge Quiz night in March which was attended by a number of other cub packs, including teams from Bishopton, Inchinnan, Kilbarchan and Erskine. After a very hard fought contest, there was a three way tie between Houston, Inchinnan and Bishopton. Inchinnan won the tie break question and were crowned winners for this year.

Finally all cubs will be busy over the Easter break helping with their “Sponsor a job” forms so all these mundane tasks can be taken care of by eager helpers!
