Kilmacolm Camera Club
Our Annual Competition was judged by Lorna McDonald, of Alba Camera Club. In the Print Section, this year’s school swot was Bill Ham (again!), with all three top places. In the Digital Competition, David Walker came first, Janice Stevenson was second (with “Ethiopian Girl“, shown here), and David Walker and Bill Ham shared third place.
Our season ended with an excellent evening meal at River Inn, Crosslee. I’m not suggesting that some of us ate too much, but I’ve a feeling that next year’s self-portraits may require a (very) wide-angle lens! After the meal, the trophies for this Season’s competitions were awarded, as follows:-
Print League – Bill Ham; Digital League – David Walker. And in the Annual Competition mentioned earlier, the winners were:-
Best Print – Bill Ham; Best Monochrome Print – Bill Ham; Best Print Portfolio – Bill Ham; Best Digital Image – David Walker; Best Digital Portfolio – David Walker.
Bill Ham (right) is shown here receiving one of his plethora of trophies from President Billy Blair.
The Club has completed another fun-packed season, and are now established in their bright, luxurious accommodation in the New Community Centre. Roll on next season! In the meantime, we hope to be out and about on short field trips, sharing or seeking photo tips. Please feel free to join us on these soon – the May/June weather is usually better than soggy July!
Venue: Kilmacolm New Community Centre, Room 1.01; Tuesday evening, time 7.30pm. Contacts: Billy Blair, Tel: 873383; Janice Stevenson, Tel 873595.
Needed Now As Much As Then
“ The tragedies of war are many. Among the saddest is that of young and vigorous manhood returned from the battlefield maimed and broken, of able and strong men who have lost limbs … in their countries cause”.
Thus wrote John Calder in Vanishing Willows, his history of the Erskine Hospital that was set up in 1916 to cater for the thousands of wounded and limbless service men returning from the Great War. It specialised in providing artificial limbs made of willow wood crafted by skills from Clydeside shipyards.
Gryffe Valley Rotary Club was recently addressed by Linda O’Malley, who is regional fundraising coordinator for Erskine. She said that no one could have foreseen that 95 years later, Erskine care would be a continuing need. She described how over the years Erskine had evolved to meet the needs arising from successive wars up to the current conflict in Afghanistan. The original hospital has now been sold and a new-build care home was opened by Prince Charles on the Erskine site in 2000. It features en-suite rooms plus communal dining and leisure rooms in addition to medical facilities. Overall, Erskine now has some 1400 residents in homes at Bishopton and elsewhere in Scotland, including Edinburgh where specialist support is provided those returning injured from Afghanistan.
Linda described the various commercial enterprises they run which provide supported employment for ex service personnel and disabled workers. These include a garden centre and café, furniture, print and stationary services and training and conference facilities. Linda urged everyone to support these enterprises – not only do they provide high quality goods and services but every pound spent is a contribution to the fine work which Erskine still provides - 95 years on and still a cause well worthy of our support.
The photo shows Linda flanked by president John Tuck and by Rod Headon Smith who introduced her.
