www.nepalorphanshome.org MUGA at the Park

The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), on the site of the former tennis courts at Birkmyre Park, unfortunately appears to continue as a controversial issue.

It cannot be ignored that this signifi cant investment offers a great opportunity and enhances the facilities at the Park. However, while the area is ring-fenced with a secure gate, health & safety fears

seem to have led to a decision to cut a ‘creep-hole’ opening in the fence; presumably the idea being to save any adventurous youngster from having to climb the fence to gain unauthorised access and the risk of hurting themselves in the process. It seems a bit of a contradiction to have a locked gate on one side and open access on the other.

While fully supportive of the investment in creating this superb facility, I share in the frustrations of the residents who are presently affected by the uncontrolled use and associated nuisance caused. The present arrangement seems illogical, but hopefully a remedy will be found shortly.

Hours of operation: Mon-Fri: 9am - 9pm, Sat/Sun: 10am - 5pm

Bookings available in one hour slots, charges: Children or any groups of 4 or less: £10/hr with fl ood-lights, £7/hr w/o lights; Adults: £14/hr with fl ood-lights, £10/hr w/o lights. Bookings can be made via Birkmyre Fitness Gym reception: 01475 715750.

STOP PRESS !!!... the “creep-hole” was closed whilst the court-lines were being painted, but we understand this closure is only temporary. We’ll hopefully have an update next month, or even sooner on Facebook.

A few weeks ago I was asked by members of the Kilmacolm Community Council if I could assist with getting overgrown bushes cut back at Barrs Brae and I was happy to progress this with council offi cials. I am happy to report that recently Inverclyde Council ground services cut back the overgrowth.

Last month I had my fi rst opportunity to look round the refurbished Kilmacolm New Community Centre while holding my surgery there. The centre looks fantastic. It is a great testimony to all the hard work put in by the KNCC board members, past and present, and to everyone who was involved in taking the project forward to refurbish the New Community Centre and library buildings. With other councillors I was more than happy to agree the funding at committee from the council that was granted to help enable the work to happen. Kilmacolm boasts a fantastic community facility that will be the envy of so many in Inverclyde and beyond the district.

The new Multi Use Game Arena (MUGA) at Birkmyre Park had created some controversy, even before it was built, with residents in Kilmacolm for and against it. Since it was completed I have had a few complaints about the MUGA. The main complaint is that at times it is being used outwith its opening hours and that some young people using the facility are using bad language which is understandably upsetting nearby residents. I have discussed some of these issues with the police. We must hope that this is purely teething problems and that when "ownership” of the MUGA is better established some of these problems will stop.

It is good to see that more road repairs have been ongoing in Kilmacolm in recent weeks. Additional money for roads is something that my own political group on the council were calling for so it is good to see that more roads, pot holes and pathways are being repaired in Kilmacolm, and throughout other parts of the district. I was particularly glad to see work getting done around West Glen Park as this has been an area that some constituents had contacted me about some time ago.

I am also glad to see that council offi cials are considering proposals for some 20mph zones in Kilmacolm. Readers of the Advertizer will know from some of my previous articles that this is something I have called for some time. I have had several Kilmacolm constituents contact me about speeding in the past. More 20mph zones in our communities is something that has been discussed at the West of Scotland Road Safety Forum which I represent Inverclyde Council on.

My next surgeries in May are on Wednesday 4th at Clune Park Resource Centre in Port Glasgow from 1pm - 2pm and Monday 16th at Woodhall Tenants Hall, Port Glasgow from 5pm - 6pm. Anyone wanting to contact me can do so by phoning me at my council offi ce on 01475 712727 or on my mobile phone 07747 765839, or by emailing me at: jim.macleod@ inverclyde.gov.uk or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 1LY.
