Latin
and
Greek Prose & Verse Speaking Competition
In the recent Glasgow and
West of Scotland Latin and Greek Prose and Verse Speaking Competition held at the University of Glasgow, Matthew Garrett (SI - photo right) took 2nd place in the Standard Latin Prose section. His achievement was all the more remarkable due to the age difference between Matthew and the other competitors, who were all in SIII-SIV.

Two pupils from St Columba’s have been selected for the Scottish Space School. Melissa Meighan and Charlotte Mitchell, both SV, will take part in the programme at the University of Strathclyde this June.
The Scottish Space School is an annual fi ve-day event which aims to “inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by highlighting the career and educational opportunities available to young people with an interest in science, engineering and technology.”
Kilbarchan Primary School
The Pupil Council at Kilbarchan Primary have been working very hard to create a new activity area in the school called The Zone. They presented their plans to the Parent Council who were happy to give them the money to realise their dream. The children were helped in this venture by classroom assistants Mrs Imlach, Mrs McGowan and Mrs Keith who were all present at the offi cial opening. This will be the last school event the ladies will take part in as they are all retiring at the end of March. Everyone at Kilbarchan would like to wish them all the best for the future.

Congratulations go to Alison from Primary 7 who scooped fi rst place in our school Talent Show. She fought off stiff competition from 13 other acts to win the school trophy and the top prize. Well done to all who auditioned in the earlier rounds, as well as to those who made it through to the Grand Final. Our 3 judges were Marjorie (our Storyteller), Donnie (our Active Sports Coordinator) and Lindsay (our rugby coach and member of the Scotland Ladies International Team). The standard of entry was so high that the three judges debated for an extended length of time which nearly took us into the school holidays! They admitted that the decision was very diffi cult to make given the variety of acts which performed. We had comedy acts, a magic act, dance acts, singers and even our resident boy band, “The Unknown”. Our Pupil Council. who organised the event and ran it on the day, did an amazing job. As well as organising the props, sound system, rehearsals, stage curtains, sound checks and the playing of backing tracks, they also compered the whole show from beginning to end. They even organised the prize giving at the end - what a great team!
We held opened our FairTrade cafe to the community at the end of term too and this was well attended. Thanks to all who supported and came along to try out or purchase some FairTrade goods. Primary 7 performed their mini-play on World War II to the whole school and we held our fi nal Achievement Assembly of the term. Primary 7 also concluded their design work for the local underpass. Our staff continue to embrace and extend their knowledge of Curriculum for Excellence during the recent in-service days.
Our pupils attended the many Lenten services which were held in St Fillan’s Church. Thanks to Fr Danny for providing us with the opportunity of taking part in “5 minute refl ections” in the church each morning before school. Many of the pupils from our Primary 4 class are continuing to work with their families, their teachers, Fr Danny and Sister Mary Frances in preparation for their Sacrament of First Communion which will take place on Sunday 15th May. We wish them well when it comes.
We are also out and about this month visiting all our nursery children who will be starting at St Fillan’s in August. Parents and children will also have the chance to attend our Primary 1 Induction Afternoons on Wednesday 1st June & Wednesday 8th June (both 2-3pm). We look forward to seeing you then.
