Strathgryffe Tennis Club
Strathgryffe’s Green and Orange Ball tennis team were crowned champions of this winter’s West Region Green and Orange Ball Performance League. West Region teams competed on Wednesday evenings at Scotstoun Leisure Centre, Glasgow throughout the winter. Each
team, comprising two orange ball (9 & u) and two green ball (10 & u) players, played ten matches against other clubs.
After the final match
was played earlier this month, Strathgryffe emerged as this winter’s champions with 55 points. The Strathgryffe pool of players participating was Holly Docherty, Chloe and Amber Duncan, George Gourlay, Abbie Kerr, Kieran Nisbet, Craig Robertson, Connor Thomson and Chris Torrance. Whitecraigs were runners-up with 43 points with Giffnock a close third on 42 points.
At a fun night
presentation at Scotstoun on Wednesday evening, prizes were awarded to players from all participating teams by Tennis Development Manager (West Region) Mike Cohen and organiser Elizabeth Watt from the county office.
The Strathgryffe summer coaching programme for tennis & squash will begin after the Easter Holidays. Non members are welcome to participate and should phone the club on 01505 615100 for more information.
Kilmacolm Tennis Club
The Club is always looking for new members. With its new state of the art artificial grass playing surface, floodlit courts, social calendar and extremely competitive rates joining Kilmacolm Tennis Club is a very tempting proposition for tennis players old and new. Giulio Spella our Club Coach runs coaching
sessions throughout the year for members and non members. In addition to this the Club gives a high priority to ensuring new members are well received into the Club. Langbank Tennis Club New Season
Anyone interested in playing a bit of social tennis will be most welcome to join us. Adult membership is £25 with juniors £10 for the whole season which runs approximately to the end of September or as long as weather permits. A Family membership is £50. We are running junior coaching sessions as usual this season with our experienced coach Rob and will indicate dates and times on the local notice board and through the primary school. John G Fleming Bowling Club
The Bowling Green in Houston was officially opened on Saturday 9th April when 2011 President Norman Robertson welcomed a large crowd and guests. The club is looking forward to another busy season and will do its best to emulate the 2010 successes.
Weather permitting, the club will hold Bowls & Barbecue Fun Nights during the summer (details to follow).
The club is also trying to attract new members from Houston and Bridge of Weir - anyone from complete beginners to experienced bowlers will all be made very welcome.

Swimming Success for REN 96
Mhairi High was the star performer for REN 96 who enjoyed significant success at the recent national championships. Mhairi was the finalist on six occasions and won bronze medals in the 1500m freestyle and 200m butterfly events.
Well done to Rhiannon Gilkes of Kilmacolm who narrowly missed out on a medal finishing fourth in the 100m freestyle. Rhiannon was also a finalist in the 200m backstroke.
Other successful competitors from the REN96 club were David Orr, Ross Gale, Ross Young and Nicola Connor who all achieved individual top ten places. The boy’s 11-14 year old relay team won their heat and achieved a 7th place finish.
Great Results for Kilbarchan Athletics
Gemma Rankin had an outstanding run at the Tom Scott Memorial 10 mile Road Race at Strathclyde Park in April. Gemma, who lives in Paisley and is a member of Kilbarchan Athletic Club, was timed at 60 minutes 8 seconds which won her the Scottish 10mile Road Race title. Kilbarchan Men won Bronze in their Team competition led by Chris Devenney 7th in 53.07, supported by Conor McNulty 10th and Stephen Spiers 38th.
Elsewhere, there was an impressive performance from Mia Shepherd in the Hammerama at Grangemouth, who set a Kilbarchan under 15s Hammer record with a throw measured at 35.48m, which ranks her 3rd in Scotland and 5th in the UK.
On Sunday 10th April, some young Kilbarchan athletes competed in the Open meeting at the impressive new Saltcoats track facility. Winners included Gavin McArdle (under 15s 800m in 2.10.6), Laura Stark (u13 1500m in 5.13.7), Andrew MacAngus (u11 800m in 2,36.9), Mia Shepherd (u15s Hammer with 34.75m) and Cameron Stark (u11 Shot)... Mia was also 3rd in the 75m Hurdles with Clubmate Victoria Cleer 2nd and there was also a good Hurdles run by Imogen Davies, 2nd in the u13s event.
There were good performances in the sprints from Emma Devine (2nd u13s 150n), Bethany Craig (u11s 2nd 80m and 150m) and in the endurance events good places for Rebecca Craig (2nd 2nd u13s 1500m), Kerry MacAngus (u13s 800m), Connor Thomson (2nd u13 1500m). In the Field events, top places for Connor Thomson (u13 Shot 2nd), Lewis King (u11 Long Jump 2nd), Bethany Craig (u11 Long Jump 2nd), Maddy Cleat and Laura Stark (=3rd in u13s High Jump).
Start in the park for a walk in the dark
Ardgowan Hospice’s 2nd Moonlight Walk has got off to a flying start with over 600 participants already registered for the event.
Registration cost is the same as last year at £15, with a minimum sponsorship of £30. You can enter online at
