Gourock Highland Games, Gourock Park, Sunday 8th May
This year, Gourock Highland Games celebrates its 55th birthday and it promises to be the biggest ever, with a host of children’s entertainment, fun workshops, puppeteers and storytelling being just a few of the attractions to add to our traditional events programme. Try your hand at jousting, or bungee running in our infl atable fun zone.
We also look forward to welcoming the Darroch family back to Gourock Highland Games when the present clan chief, Claire Darroch-Thompson presides over the Games as Chieftain.
This year, we have decided to expand the programme of events and entertainment throughout the Gourock Park from George Road, to the new amphitheatre next to Pets Corner.
In the main arena, the West of Scotland Junior Highland Dance Championship, Gourock Pipe Band and Drum Majors’ Contest and the ever popular Heavyweight Championship will entertain Games’ enthusiasts in the main arena from 12 noon.
Gourock’s schoolchildren will add to the traditional programme with their own Junior Highland Games including the Kiltie Dash, Caber Toss, and Throwing the Weight for Height.
Also in the main arena, Scotland’s Cycle Stunt Team ‘The Clan’ will wow you with the most extreme and skilful cycling display show in the UK. The Clan show includes huge jumps, scary tricks and near-impossible feats of balance and nerve on their custom-built stunt rig. Prepare to be amazed!
Gourock Park’s new amphitheatre is the stage for Gourock Highland Games’ fi rst fashion show, sponsored by Greenock’s Oak Mall Shopping Centre. Local traders can showcase their styles and designs, ranging from tartan fashions, to locally designed clothing.
Greenock’s Phoenix Car Club will enthral vintage car enthusiasts in one of the lower parks, when they bring along some of their treasured models.
Dreams Come True, a non profi t organisation, raise money for children with life-limiting illnesses to make their treasured dreams come true. The newly-formed Dreams Come True Inverclyde charity is holding a number of Dream Miles on the new 3rd generation fi eldturf football pitch off Drumshantie Road, just below the main games arena.
Add to this Climb-It’s climbing wall, falconry display, funfair and an array of infl atable castles, Come and Try sporting events, a myriad of traders, crafters and local community groups, Gourock Highland Games promises to be a great family day out.
