local outdoors Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park

40th Birthday at Castle Semple Centre in July The country park was offi cially opened by Viscount Muirshiel on the 17th July, 1971. To commemorate the event, there will be a birthday party at the loch featuring a return to the early seventies in music, clothes, food and games. A star attraction, with the help of our local water sports clubs will be a fun for all water pentathlon. See separate article for more information!

Online Communications

In addition to the Regional Park website (www.clydemuirshiel.co.uk) the Park now has facebook and twitter pages. Do ‘follow’ us www. twitter.com/clydemuirshiel or ‘like’ us on Facebook -.www.facebook. com/clydemuirshielregionalpark you can see what is going on without having your own account.

Warm Weather at Castle Semple

The warm weather at the beginning of the Easter holidays was very well received at the Regional Park’s loch side location. Many cyclists and walkers milled around looking for refreshment whilst those in cars milled around seeking a space to park. Boat and Bike Hire appeared to be doing good business whilst many other visitors simply lay down on the grass and sunbathed!

Castle Semple Rowing Regatta

Castle Semple Rowing Club will be hosting their annual Rowing Regatta Event on Saturday 21st May. This is a huge event with clubs coming from all over the UK to race on the loch, so please get there early as the car park will be very busy or consider using local public transport links. The fi rst Regatta was held in 1971 so this is the 40th anniversary of the event!

Scottish Biodiversity Week

Sat 21st to Sun 29th May To celebrate Scottish Biodiversity Week the park has several events taking place at each of our three centres. Join the Castle Semple Ranger team for an evening bat hunt on Friday 20th May as they seek out these notoriously secretive mammals. Muirshiel’s Rangers host the fi rst ‘Wings over the Heather’ walk on Sunday 22nd May, or if you like to be beside the sea, join the Greenock Cut team as they search the rock pools of Lunderston Bay.

New ‘What’s On’ Guide – Hot off the Press!

Do you want to know what’s happening across the Regional Park this summer? Pick up a NEW Spring/Summer 2011 What’s On guide at your local centre or see our website events page for more information.

Summer Visitors to Clyde Muirshiel

Some avian summer visitors (blackcap, willow warbler and chiffchaff) are now warbling through the trees surrounding the National Cycle Route 7. On Semple Loch, the Whooper Swan with the badly mended wing was vainly trying to take off to join his family in more northern climes.

Good News for the Regional Park’s Juniper Juniper cuttings taken last Autumn show signs of surviving the cold harsh winter. Being notoriously hard to propagate, no great expectations were being held for the Juniper cuttings that were taken last Autumn. They have spent the long winter inside the new polytunnel at Barnbrock and it was with some

relief to see that new growth on over 40 of the cuttings has begun!

Photographic Competition 2011 It’s time to get snapping! There is £250 to be won. Look online or pick up a leafl et at a Visitor Centre for details. The theme is ‘Woodlands of Clyde Muirshiel’ as it is International Year of Forests.
