The fi tting out of the new Kilmacolm Library is due to start on Monday 9th May. Work has been delayed due to a water leak at the refurbished former school board building, which is the new home for the library. Fitting out should not take that long, so the Library should be open before the end of May.
While the delay has been disappointing I am sure that the new facility will be well worth the wait. It is being fi tted out to a very high standard and will include a children’s section and a learning zone with 11 public access PCs and an interactive whiteboard, which will enhance the computing classes the Library Service is
planning to run. The Service is also lining up a celebrated author to host an offi cial opening event.
As I reported last month, I have been lobbying for funding for the upgrading the West Glen Road play area in Kilmacolm. I am hopeful that at its meeting on 3rd May the Council’s Safe, Sustainable Communities Committee will allocate a sum of money for this purpose.
At its last meeting the Council’s Grants Sub-Committee awarded a grant of £1,000 to Quarriers United Football Club to buy equipment. I was pleased to lend my support to this application as the Club’s volunteer coaches and offi cials do such a great job for our young people.
The Council’s Youth Services have agreed to support the re-establishment of the Friday night Kilmacolm Youth Group in the new community centre by funding seasonal staff up to the summer. Adult volunteers are needed however to help run the group. Anyone interested in helping out should email
Hugh.Scott@

Work is continuing in preparation for Port Glasgow High School’s temporary move into the St Stephen’s campus in August, to make way for the building of the new shared campus on the Port High site. The programme for the new campus – which also includes a new special needs school - is on track, with a site start anticipated in late summer.
At the Full Council meeting on 14th April I was appointed as Vice Convener of the Council’s Regeneration Committee. I am looking forward to working with the new Convener, Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld, to drive forward the Council’s regeneration strategy in the fi nal year of the current term.
My advice surgeries are advertised on the Council’s website (www.

Robert Galbraith (21/2/1950 – 1/4/2011) Saddened to hear of the premature loss of Robert Galbraith.
“Rab”, or “Gully” as he was more affectionately known, will be fondly remembered by many within the Village.
“Gully” was an assistant-leader running the Kilmacolm Cubs and Scouts groups at the Scout Hall on Barr’s Brae, as a teenager in the 60s and thereafter spanning fi ve decades until stepping down just 8 years ago. He was also heavily involved with the local Kilmacolm youth football team, “The Wanderers”, which in its hey-day almost every kid in the Village seemed to play for. Latterly Robert was the Crossing-man at Kilmacolm Cross, until the position was discontinued just a few years ago; he then took up a position at the Greenock Oak Mall.
Unbeknown to most, Robert had been suffering long-term health issues and it was an associated complication which lead to his sudden departure. Robert is survived by his wife Linda and sons Stephen and Gary, and Robert’s brother Hector and his family who still live in the Galbraith family’s home town of Golspie in Sutherland.
