The Kilbarchan Habbies’ 10th Art Exhibition
A heartfelt thanks to all those who helped to make our 10th exhibition, yet again, a great success. Preview night saw a packed hall and many more sales than we anticipated, bearing in mind the current fi nancial situation. We would like to think it was the standard of work and not the wine that persuaded guests to snap up many of the paintings on display!
Andy Stark of Start Images very kindly offered his expertise in photography for our posters and invitations which advertised the event and Mailboxes Shawlands did a wonderful job of printing them. Kay Coleman of Green Scene Interior Landscape (Houston), provided beautiful fl ower and plant displays which added greatly to the atmosphere of the exhibition. Many thanks to you all.
A lot of hard work goes into organising the event, but it is all worthwhile in the end. The tea room and raffl e were both very popular and we are indebted to local businesses for donations to the raffl e - in particular The Fox and Hounds, Houston, The Co-operative and Bobbins in Kilbarchan, The Post Offi ce in Houston and The Frame Shop in Johnstone. Because of the success of the show, we shall once again be able to donate to a local charity. So thanks again to all who came along and supported and encouraged our efforts. See you all again next year!!
The Old Kilbarchan Library Centre
The Old Kilbarchan Library Centre has now been open as a Community Facility for 10 years. The Centre is organised by Kilbarchan Improvement Projects (KIPCo) which consists of a Board of seven volunteers. As with many organisations over the years there have been ups and downs. Throughout these times the Board has been helped by a team of enthusiastic helpers and the support of a great number of villagers from Kilbarchan and surrounding area. The Centre has also been extremely lucky with the Staff members who have greatly lightened the load of the Board and who have most effi ciently helped the Centre visitors. It is with regret that the Board have accepted the resignation of Colin who has been working in the Centre offi ce for 5 years. Colin, an exceptional photographer, has been very generous in sharing his expertise and skill with many people and he will be greatly missed. The Board wish him well and hope that he will return frequently to the Centre.
Financing the running of the Centre is no easy task and the recent high cost of water and electricity, together with the maintenance of the building, is quite a burden. The Centre relies on people using it to attend events, classes, hire of the meeting room, photocopying, laminating and on giving it their support through donations. The Board thanks these people.
Most recently the Board has formed a joint venture with the Local Energy Action Plan (LEAP) and information of this project will be available from The Old Library Centre.

May 2011 is important in the history of Kilbarchan East as the congregation celebrates 225 years of worship. Our congregation began as a protest against the system of “Patronage” whereby a local landowner could “present” a minister to the Parish. The “Presbytery for the Relief of Conscience” was a breakaway from the Church of Scotland and in Kilbarchan, the Weaving Community supported the Relief and Rev Mr Bell was appointed to preach on Sunday 28th May 1786 on the Steeple Knowe-the Square. On that Sunday, Mr Bell preached to a congregation thought to number 1000 and the building of the Relief Church of Kilbarchan followed in 1787. In 1929, Established Church and United Free churches united and our building became Kilbarchan East Church of Scotland. Worship continues on Sundays at 11am, led by our Locum, Mr Russell Banks, Reader, assisted by our Worship Leaders, Christine Erwin, Margaret Gibb and Margaret Christine and on occasion by the Music group and the Junior choir. All are welcome.
