The Glasgow Boys Revisited
Hugh Stevenson is the Art Curator at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. When he visited Gryffe Valley Rotary Club, he talked about last year’s exhibition of some 140 works painted between 1880 and 1890 by “The Glasgow Boys”, a group of some 23 Glasgow based artists who were at their peak during that period. The exhibition was the best-selling visual arts event of all time at the museum, attracting some 123,000 visitors over its 6 month duration, before moving down to the Royal Academy in London where 105,000 visitors saw it in just a 3 month period.

Hugh’s talk was well illustrated with many on the paintings that were on display, but he also gave a fascinating insight into the some of the background involved in the staging of the exhibition. Firstly the basement area at the museum had to be refurbished and then a panel of 4 had to select and assemble the collection of paintings. These had to be begged or borrowed (though he confi rmed that none were stolen!) from other galleries or from private owners as a result of gentle persuasion, wheedling, coercion or whatever it took. He described some successes, including acquiring a work by Jules Bastion- Lepage who had a great infl uence on the Boys, and some failures where some works could just not be released by the owners at that time.
The costs of insuring and transporting these valuable and sometimes fragile works of art was signifi cant, reaching £25,000 in one case, though happily the exhibition was able to more than cover all of its costs. The local content of many of the works offered the opportunity for research, and Hugh had deduced and visited some of the locations like Helensburgh and Coburnspath to see how they look today. Also a number of visitors were able identify some of the subjects in the paintings as relatives, adding to the interest and understanding of the works.
Hugh’s enthusiasm on the subject was palpable and infectious. For anyone who was unfortunate enough to miss the Kelvingrove exhibition, another exhibition of the Glasgow Boys work is being staged in Kirkcudbright in July/August this year. The photo shows Hugh on the left with past president John King and his long term friend Angus Matheson who introduced him.
