Five-a-side Football

Tenth season & still looking for new blood. No-one is too old or too unfit. No talent required, just good sense of humour. We play at Powerleague, Paisley, Monday 6pm. Call Jim Bretherton on 01505 874215.

Birkmyre Rugby Club

The rugby club season is almost at an end and it has been a very successful one for Birkmyre Rugby Club. Last year saw the club promoted and rather than simply resting on their laurels and looking to simply survive, the club has spent the entire season at the upper end of their new division.

At the time of writing we are a mere 3 points behind league leaders Paisley; who the club defeated in a pulsating game at Birkmyre park played in early April. Recent wins have also been recorded over Carrick, Moffat and Strathclyde Police. The final game of the season is at our home park on Saturday 30th April when Clydesdale will be the visitors; and immediately prior to that we will have played away games against both Jordanhill and Mull; and will have taken a touring party of 25 individuals over to Belfast.

We have been very fortunate over the past few seasons to have had the services of John Black as our head coach. John has been with us during this upward run and continues to guide the team forward by developing and looking after our players. We are now fortunate that John has been joined by Iain Forster in our coaching team, and this has helped to add further improvements to the over all team. Iain may be well known to many in the area through his job as Rugby Development officer.

The season will as always conclude with our ever popular AGM and dinner at the River Inn on 6th May. In attendance this year will be current SRU President and former British Lion Ian McLaughlin; and he will be accompanied by his fellow British Lion front row stalwart and friend of Birkmyre Sandy Carmichael. In addition to these two rugby heroes a feast of entertainment has been arranged, including popular after dinner speaker Bill Copland.

The end of season it may be, but none the less an extremely busy one for Birkmyre Rugby Club. If anyone would like any further information on any of the above please contact Peter Haveron on 07815 090 839.

Birkmyre Girls in U15 Scottish Cup Victory

Birkmyre and Johnstone HS girls Louise and Siobhan McMillan were included in the Glasgow U15 squad that defeated Langholm 48-7 at Murrayfield emphatically underlining their status as national champions.

Their cup run included victories over Ayrshire, Hyndland HS, Murrayfield Wanderers, and Crieff HS on the way to the Brewin Dolphin Title. The squad included girls from Biggar, Birkmyre, Cartha, and Whitecraigs which meant that coach Andrew Muir had to work hard to overcome the difficulties in getting players together for training sessions. For many of the girls in the team this was their first experience of playing rugby and show just how fast they have picked up rugby and developed as players.

Locally the girls have benefited from the efforts of SRU regional development officer Lindsay Smith who works full time in schools across Renfrewshire to increase the numbers of boys and girls participating in rugby. Lindsay plays for the Scotland women’s team and it is a privilege to have a current Scottish internationalist in such a hands on role.

Louise and Siobhan started playing with Birkmyre minis when they were four and five respectively and made the move to midi rugby when they reached high school. Mini rugby is for children at primary school with boys and girls playing together, midi rugby is for children at high school and is organised along separate lines for boys and girls.

Coaching sessions are run every Sunday afternoon from 1pm at Birkmyre Park in Kilmacolm and everyone is welcome to come give it a try.

Bishopton Rugby strengthens links with Park Mains High School

Last season BRFC donated money to Park Mains to allow them to buy a set of school rugby jerseys, this season our volunteer coaches went one better by assisting on the pitch. As well as helping out at the school training sessions on Monday evenings, Andy Jackson and Stu Hunt took time out to coach the Park Mains teams at the Renfrewshire 7 aside tournament held at Paisley’s Anchor ground on 23rd March. Park Mains fielded two teams in the tournament, the first team which consisted predominantly of the Bishopton Rugby ‘young guns’ finished 3rd in the tournament.
