The online resource assembled here was inspired by Shaping Your Family’s Future, a full-length book published by Philhaven, a not-for-profit, Mennonite Church USA related behavioral health organization serving South Central Pennsylvania. The book’s inspiration came from the idea that churches could do more to help families affirm positive attributes and break negative patterns passed from generation to generation. The United Service Foundation generously agreed to fund the original project and
provided helpful counsel throughout. A national advisory council was formed to help shape and guide the project. We are grateful to Kenton T. Derstine, Eastern Mennonite Seminary; Justin Lamason, Pastor of Family Life Ministries, Nappanee Missionary Church; Michael Schwartz, Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care, North Anderson Church of God; Tony Gore, Counseling Minister, Southeast Christian Church; Linda Rump, Calvary Church, Roseville, Minnesota; Rev. Scott Ward, First Baptist Church, Dallas; Michelle Andres, Willow Creek Community Church; and Dr. Ron Hammer, Lake Avenue Church. A local resource group provided additional input and helped to expand and strengthen the book’s content. These persons included Janet Stauffer, Omar Zook, George May, Jim Johnson, Robert Reyes, and Dave Wolfe. Writer Carla Barnhill did a superb job of incorporating the many resources brought to
the project into a coherent and impactful book. Mark Fretz (senior editor at Scribe, Inc.) offered expertise and connections in addition to managing the writing and publication processes Marganne Hoffman’s project management skills kept all of us on task, and Jim Shenk’s counsel helped to negotiate the many decisions that needed to be made along the way. LaVern Yutzy, Philhaven CEO, provided overall leadership to the project. Philhaven, now part of WellSpan Health, publishes this online abbreviated edition of
Shaping Your Family’s Future to make it accessible to a wider audience. We acknowledge with thanks the work of David B. Yoder to edit the original material and that of Beth Bostwick who managed its delivery to Philhaven’s website. Each person involved in this project caught the vision of supporting parents in shaping their families’ futures. We are grateful for their expertise, resourcefulness, and encouragement.
