SHAPING YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE
APPENDIX B
Putnam, Robert D. Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000. One more thick book that deserves reading, Putnam’s study puts to rest the myth that adults today have no interest in community and civic life. On the contrary, Putnam show that adults today are as civic-minded as previous generations. He makes a case for diving headfirst into community life for the good of ourselves, our children, and the culture itself.
Palmer, Parker. The Company of Strangers: Christians and the Renewal of America’s Public Life. New York: Crossroad, 1981.
Palmer applies theories of public life to the religious experience, demonstrating the need for churches to become more than just places of worship, but places of real community and cultural involvement.
Stafford, Tim. Never Mind the Joneses. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 2004. This book is the perfect resource for parents who want to create a meaningful family life. Filled with practical ideas, as well as solid theology, Stafford’s book shows parents how to instill biblical values in their children through sports, music, family time, and community involvement.
Tortilla Soup. Directed by Maria Ripoll, Hollywood, CA: Samuel Goldwyn Films LLC, 2001. The story of a Hispanic man and his three adult daughters hinges on the force of the cultural expectations at work in one family. As each of them deals with the ups and downs of life—dating, aging, working, relating—we see how their culture both encourages and gets in the way of their ability to make choices and move forward with their lives.
