This session asks you to explore ideas of faith and God that you learned from your family of origin. Keep in mind that no two people have the same ideas about God, faith, and religion.

Faith is part of being human. We know that there is more to life than just our physical being. Our ideas and beliefs about faith flow into every aspect of our lives. A person who grows up in a home where the parents practice grace toward their child may be more likely to see God as compassionate. A person constantly put down at work or at home might start to question her value to people and, eventually, her value in the eyes of God. That’s why the first session in this course turns to faith. In it, you begin to uncover some of the ways in which your family of origin shaped your ideas about faith. This chapter urges you to discuss the messages about religion that you want to pass on to your children. You develop a deeper idea of the role faith can play in other areas of your life. And that new understanding helps you get more out of the concepts of self, marriage, parenting, and community presented in the next chapters. For more about Family Systems theory, click the button.
