SHAPING YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE and present relationships.

4. Forgiveness is an important means for breaking unhealthy relationships and patterns of behavior, as well as healing the personal hurts you have experienced in life.

Resources

Balswick, Jack O., and Judith K. Balswick. The Family: A Christian Perspective on the Family Home. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 1999. There are many, many Christian resources that deal with the family, but few do so from the theological, sociological, and psychological perspective the Balswicks offer. Rather than giving pat Christian solutions to the complex challenges of family life, they provide thoughtful, encouraging understanding of how faith and family can intersect.

The Enneagram Institute (http://www.enneagraminstitute.com) The ideas presented in this chapter only scratch the surface of the Enneagram. If you are interested in taking a more detailed test to determine your relational pattern, you can find several options here. You will also find more complete descriptions of the relational patterns, as well as other tools for exploring the spiritual implications of the Enneagram, and explanations for how various relational patterns interact.

Guest, Judith. Ordinary People. New York: Penguin, 1982. Whether you read the book or watch the 1980 movie starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton, you will have a hard time finding a better example of the family dance and its impact on self- image.

McGoldrick, Monica. You Can Go Home Again: Reconnecting with Your Family. New York: W. W. Norton, 1997.

McGoldrick’s book can be a bit academic, but it is an invaluable resource for helping you identify the patterns and factors at work in multiple generations of your family of origin.

Riso, Don Richard, and Russ Hudson. The Wisdom of the Enneagram. New York: Bantam, 1999. The best way to explore the Enneagram relational patterns is to dig into this book, which lays out the complexities and variations of each relational pattern. You will also find out more about the spiritual implications of your relational pattern and the ways in which your understanding of God ties into your general understanding of the world.
