Future, your family of origin shapes the way you and your co-parent relate to the culture around you. Even your ideas about what “culture” means will differ depending on your background. For the sake of this session, we will use the word culture as a way of talking about the society in which we live. You will also come across the word “community” in this session. We will use that term to describe the people and places with whom you have regular interactions—your neighborhood, your town, your church, your workplace. As you will see, the influence of your community and the value you place on that community will also have a tremendous impact on the way you view culture. The term culture here

It can be helpful to think of society as a super-sized family system. Every society has its own set of expectations, norms, and values. As in the personal family system, the expectations of a cultural family system are often unspoken. These messages play a huge role in the way people in that system think. The values of the system become the values of the people in the system.
