SHAPING YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE

2 • GETTING TO KNOW YOU

The purpose in taking a closer look at your family’s dance is not to cut in and make everyone change their steps. Rather, the purpose of bringing the family dance into the light is to notice the ways in which the dance has shaped your sense of self and your place in the world and open up paths of compassion for yourself and others caught in the dance. This process reminds us that we can control the dance together. Recognizing this frees

you from assuming that each person always has performed the same steps in the family dance. It also reminds you that other members of your family have permission to change and grow. You need to be willing to let them adjust their steps along with yours.

the enneagram There are all kinds of resources to help you develop a better understanding of your

relational pattern with yourself and others. One of the most helpful of these is the Enneagram. The Enneagram is an interrelated system of nine relational patterns. Don Riso and Russ Hudson, the developers of the Enneagram Type Indicator, identify the nine relational patterns of the Enneagram by both a number and a name. While the names are helpful labels, they can also feel a bit limiting. For example, if you discover you are an Eight—the Challenger—that doesn’t mean you are always assertive. So if you choose to take the test, don’t get hung up on the labels, and read and explore the Enneagram site until you feel you have

a good grasp on what your type means for your concept of self and those around you. To learn more about these patterns, visit the Enneagram Institute website.
