a 24 hour operation. Te homogenised system setup across all labs worldwide means that GLI can test European jurisdictions in the US, and Australian standards in Europe and vice versa. Te company also uses a software solution called JIRA, which allows both GLI and its clients to keep track at all times on the status of any particular project. JIRA doesn’t rely on emails, its cloud-based functionality allows GLI to keep each project updated in real time, so that the client can log into their account and know that GLI has received the job, know who’s assigned to it, can track progress and know exactly when the project has been worked upon. “It’s a wonderful tool,” describes Dennis. “Instead of trying to keep track of tens of thousands of emails, JIRA handles all communication in real-time and creates a searchable database, so that we or the client can quickly and easily find the specific information needed.”


One of the things that strikes you immediately about GLI is that it’s a very people orientated company. It was a bit surprising, seeing how many people are involved in the testing and certification process. Having read so many articles explaining how technology is going to replace certain roles, one of

them being accountants, who seem to have a target painted on their back by robots and automatons, the nature of regulation and the technical requirements would seem to suggest that you could tick a series of boxes and you’d simply receive your compliance certificate. However, it’s only when you talk to GLI and discuss their work that you appreciate the huge level of interpretation and understanding required, which means that you need people in this process rather than box-ticking ‘bots.

I see technology as increasing the need for people and the demand for an independent lab.
